Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren McKenzie.
Lauren, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I, Lauren McKenzie, aka “Lauren Raqs,” started my belly dance journey at age 5 when I saw my first belly dancer at the local renaissance fair and fell completely in love. And at age 15, I started dance classes under the instruction of that first belly dancer I saw, Melonye “Desdemona” Grant. I’m 32 now, a deeply rooted east Texas native, I’ve lived from the piney woods to the Rocky Mountains, to the gulf coast and back, and I haven’t stopped dancing. I’m a professionally trained performer and instructor. I’ve had some of the best teachers that Texas and Colorado have had to offer, and always a lifelong student first. I teach, train, and perform in Tyler, TX, and surrounding areas. I’m currently assistant director to the Tyler belly dance troupe “Second Harvest Dance Company,” a group formed by instructor Melodee “Damiana” Godsey. Also, MC and dance member with the Longview group “Bohemian Jewels” with fellow dancer and instructor Amber Gamal. You may have seen me for events such as Avalon Faire, Athena’s Greek Restaurant, Tyler Celtic Fest, and Kilgore Geekend. I perform for parties, wedding, fairs, and festivals! I also teach an outdoor class in Tyler throughout the year.
But at the end of the day, I’m always mom. I have four handsome, clever, young, and amazing sons with their dad, Brad, and I truly cherish every moment. And these boys are my best audience for any performance I’ve ever had. My family and friends are the greatest support system.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If it weren’t for my family and friends, I honestly wouldn’t know where I would be… I’ve been blessed with people that love me and support what I want to do in life. I battle daily with mental health and belly dance has been a true outlet and godsend throughout it all.
We’ve been impressed with Lauren Raqs Belly Dance, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Belly dance performer and instructor. Performing all across Texas for birthdays, weddings, markets, fairs, and festivals. Ethereal routines with silk veils, one-of-a-kind body isolations, and “don’t try this at home” acts with swords.
