Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Whisenant.
Hi Lisa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My background is in Occupational Therapy (OT). I have been an OT for almost 12 years now. I started out working in the hospital setting, everything from intensive care units to outpatient rehabilitation. I became interested in pelvic health when I was postpartum with my first child. I believe women deserve better than only a 6 week appointment after birth. I experienced postpartum anxiety symptoms and did not know how to manage or ask for help. OTs take a very holistic approach to care and have a background in mental health, so I knew healthcare providers could do better for mothers.
I was later diagnosed with endometriosis, in which I had severe and increased symptoms that flared after my pregnancy. I wanted to find a career path where I could help women improve their quality of life, feel heard and supported, and not suffer the way I had for years. I personally had participated in pelvic floor therapy, but knew it only as an area that physical therapists (PTs) could treat. Through my research, I found a few other OTs that had started their own businesses and learned pelvic health was highly considered within our scope of practice. I was fortunate enough to have another pelvic floor PT mentor me and grow my skills within women’s health as a therapist.
My husband and I started our pelvic health business in 2025 after having our third child and needing more flexibility for our growing family. With my husband’s background in healthcare development and my experience as a therapist, we make a great team at The Monarch Pelvic Health Therapy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing worth fighting for is ever a smooth road.
My first child was medical complex as an infant, and my husband and I experienced pain and helplessness that I wouldn’t wish on any parent.
From my personal experience with pelvic pain, it was something I had endured for years, but was always told it was “normal” and “part of being a woman.” I could not accept that what I was experiencing was normal, and fought to find the right providers and diagnosis. An all too familiar story with so many of patients.
As an OT, I was rejected or ignored from many clinics when first applying in the pelvic health world, strictly because I was not a PT. I have done years of advocacy for the OT profession, specially in pelvic health, to allow patients better and earlier access to care.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
