Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Shields.
Hi Lisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a full-time Real Estate consultant, helping people buy & sell Residential Real Estate in the Dallas and surrounding areas since 2005. I started with the idea of helping as many people with their Real Estate needs as possible but didn’t realize I was at a disadvantage because I had just moved to a new city and didn’t know many of people so I worked 7 days per week and became a helper at my kid’s school. I also volunteered for non-profit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and helped build homes for those in need. Before I knew it, I had created a wonderful sphere of friends and my business grew very quickly.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Real Estate is a wonderful career because I get to help people with the most important purchase (for most) in their lifetime but it’s not for the faint of heart. I went into it with the mindset of being a supportive leading role and not to chase the money. It was a challenge in the beginning to get my clientele to trust me but after a few years and referrals from past clients I built a great career that has lasted me 18 years. It wasn’t ever easy but definitely never boring! Sometimes I joke and say I am a counselor in some cases or just a friend with an ear to listen to my clients as they go through their journey. I enjoy this process most of all because I truly do enjoy helping people. Real Estate is a fluctuating industry, as it moves up and down with the state of the economy. The key is to be good at explaining to people what to expect from the start to avoid any issues with their expectations. For instance, in a seller’s market you can get a great price for the sale of your home but in most cases in that same market you will be paying top dollar on your purchase. Can’t have it both ways. As long as people are willing to listen to that logic things go great.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I help people wanting to buy and/or sell Real Estate by making sure it’s as smooth of a transaction as possible. Sometimes things just happen, but I pride myself on my ability to problem solve and with my 18 years of experience I’ve seen quite a lot! I have tons of repeat clients and my past clients send me referrals so this to me is the best compliment. I can help from beginning to end and even after! I still am a resource to my clients years later if they happen to need a plumber, contractor, etc. For 2023, I am working hard on my Real Estate investment portfolio so that I can do buy & holds, fix & flips, and possibly also short-term rentals across the country. This has been a huge dream for me and I am excited to get started. I am also looking to help more investors to create their own portfolio. The great thing about Real Estate is that if done correctly, it can create lifelong wealth and I love helping people achieve their goals.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I learned that zoom is your friend! I learned to do listing appointment on zoom, how to prepare homes for showings, how to take classes to stay up to date on contracts, and for industry changes too. I also learned how fragile life is and precious because in March of 2020, we didn’t know what the future held for our world. I had transactions that were terminated the week the country shut down because of all of the uncertainty so I had to regroup fast. Luckily, I am very frugal because it is a requirement to succeed on the roller coaster that Real Estate is. If I could give anyone any advice that is just starting out in Real Estate, it would be to save six months of what it costs for you to live. Don’t take on any new expenses that aren’t necessary until you feel confident in your ability to thrive as a Real Estate Consultant and always always always have a backup plan!
