Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorin Ali.
Hi Lorin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2013 I graduated from UTD with my bachelor’s in criminology. I thought that was the career path I wanted to take, but growing up I always loved baking. I would try to make different desserts, and in 2015 I made cake pops for a small party and got a lot of compliments. At first, I was making cake pops for fun, and next thing you know people were asking me to make them for birthdays, baby showers, bridal showers, etc. My husband convinced me to turn it into a small business because he knew I’ve always had a passion for baking. I then turned it into a small business and started adding more and more items to the menu. I started off with just cake pops, but now we make pretty much anything chocolate-covered, breakable hearts, cocoa bombs, Berry trifle cups, and more. Throughout the years I’ve definitely learned a lot about baking and running a small business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I started my small baking business it was the only job I had at the time. Then in 2018, I had my first son, and in 2020 I had my second son. It was definitely hard trying to balance being a mom to two little ones, my baking business, and my full-time job. There were days when I wanted to give up because I was struggling with trying to do it all at once. I’ve had my fair share of challenges in more recent years, and the first few years are definitely the toughest. There were months where I wouldn’t get a single order. I’ve had days where I would make the same order 3-4 times until it was perfect to me. However, I didn’t give up and I’m so thankful for all my clients and where I’m at today. Those bumps throughout the years have definitely made me stronger, and have taught me lessons I value till today.

At Lorinssweets you can expect to find good quality desserts for any occasion. We make desserts for birthday parties, baby showers, weddings, bridal showers, and more. We also offer dessert table set-ups, which a lot of people don’t know. One thing that I believe sets my business apart from others is the quality of my service and the experience I provide for my clients.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The first couple of years with starting a business are the hardest. You can do anything that you put your mind to, and with that being said practice makes perfect. A lot of people don’t see behind the scenes of your small businesses, and all the sweat and tears you put in. So don’t undercharge just to make someone happy know your worth! That was my biggest prob. There will be many challenges and obstacles you will have to overcome but you need to stay positive. I wouldn’t be where I am at today if it wasn’t for my clients. Anything is possible when you have the right people there to support you. My husband is my biggest supporter but hearing him acknowledge where I eventually want to go in life and have his support is even more marvelously encouraging. Stay humble and remember failure is success in progress.
