Community Highlights: Meet Lucas Downes of Lucas Downes Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas Downes.

Hi Lucas, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been a lover of art and creation ever since I can remember, taking every chance while growing up to try a new medium. After high school, I took on a larger scale of creation, earning a master’s degree in Architecture that was quickly followed by licensure in Texas. Though I have a deep love of Architecture, I continued to feel the urge to create without codes and jurisdictions. I began to think back to all the art forms I explored growing up, trying them out one by one until finding a particular interest in Jewelry Making. I took as much advice, tools, and scrap metal from my mother, a former jewelry designer, as I could and slowly began educating myself. Though I have so much to learn of the ancient art form, I’ve found that it fulfills my need to freely create.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Cuts, burns, and occasional shots to the ego have become a normality with new and challenging projects. The greatest hurdle of all has been the constant struggle of trial and error, without the insight of a formal education in jewelry making. Though with each new project and commission, my confidence grows and my tenacity to deliver a beautiful piece inevitably gets me through each new opportunity

Valuing myself and my work has been difficult as well. It took years to overcome the dreadful feeling of not delivering what a client is expecting, but learning to trust my passion has been the greatest key to accomplishing each new effort.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Lucas Downes Designs?
It is a humbly small business consisting of me, myself, and I. Lucas Downes Designs has a full collection of unique pieces that are modern, clean, and minimalistic. Leveraging an education in Architecture, my work integrates principles of proportion, symmetry, and balance that I often use in my professional career. Though my store contains pieces I’ve designed and curated, and some that are simply experiments; commissions continue to be my favorite projects. Bringing a client’s vision to life is an endlessly fulfilling endeavor, and often the most challenging. Not only is it more personal, it’s often where I learn the most and advance my talent for jewelry design.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Though it was a recent initiative by the city, I thoroughly enjoy the new parks and outdoor spaces Dallas has to offer. They’re typically clean, safe, and accessible! Though what I enjoy least about Dallas is the weather that has gotten too hot to truly enjoy these spaces.
