Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Johnson.
Hi Marcus , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in South Orange County, California, my entire identity was baseball. The MLB was not a dream, it was the plan. Everything else was secondary.
I spent five years at five different schools chasing that plan. Cal State San Marcos. Golden West. Santa Ana College, the top-ranked JUCO in the state. University of Texas Permian Basin in Odessa. And finally Oklahoma Christian University, where I played center field and had the best season of my career. Also my last.
Somewhere in that final year it hit me. Fifth-year player at a D2 school. The math wasn’t adding up anymore. I had chased this thing across three states and five campuses and I had to be honest with myself about where it was going. So I started thinking about what came next.
I didn’t have a business background. I was a finance major who had never touched marketing. But I showed up to a marketing club meeting one day for extra credit and heard a bookkeeper mention he needed a website. Something clicked. I walked up after and told him I could build it. I had no idea how. I just knew I would figure it out.
My best friend jumped in with me. We had two weeks to learn web design from nothing. We came back with designs, a proposal, and a business card. We got the contract. That was the beginning of Flow Forward Media.
The early strategy wasn’t complicated. Give more than you take. We did close to $100,000 in free work just to prove ourselves, build relationships, and get real experience. No shortcuts. Just reps.
When my co-founder got signed by the San Francisco Giants, I had a decision to make. I kept going.
By mid-2025 we had built solid momentum in OKC and had clients spreading across the country. But I wanted more. In June I relocated to Dallas with no clients, no guarantees, and a straightforward goal: get in front of as many people as possible. I set a target of 100 conversations in 100 days. I hit 150 in two weeks.
Ten months later, Flow Forward Media serves 60 clients nationwide across industries like private equity, real estate investment, physician groups, and oil and gas. Ninety-one percent of our new business comes through inbound referrals. That is not an accident. That is what happens when you spend years putting relationships before revenue.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, the journey has been really great. But that does not mean it has been without its battles.
Running a lean operation of three to four people means a lot of the work lives with you. There have been weeks where I barely stepped outside. Sleepless nights grinding through projects, wearing every hat, doing whatever it took to deliver. When your team is small, delegation has its limits and the weight falls on whoever is left standing. A lot of times that was me.
The good news is we have built out a team of subject matter experts across a variety of marketing disciplines now. That alone has changed everything in terms of what we can deliver and how we operate day to day.
On the client side, we have not lost many. But we have dealt with our share of difficult ones. Clients who treated us poorly, went against the contract, or flat out refused to pay after the work was done. Those situations were frustrating in the moment but they turned out to be some of the best things that happened to us. Every bad client experience forced us to tighten something up. How we structure agreements, how we vet who we work with, how we protect our team and our work. It made our fulfillment process sharper and our client selection much more intentional.
Looking back, the hard parts built the business just as much as the wins did.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Flow Forward Media ?
Flow Forward Media is a full-service digital marketing agency headquartered in Dallas, Texas. We work with service-based businesses across the country spanning industries like private equity, real estate investment, physician groups, oil and gas, data analytics, home services, and consulting. Our core services include web design, content creation, paid advertising, social media management, CRM automation, fractional CMO support, and business development consulting.
What sets us apart starts with how we think. When you work with Flow Forward Media you are not just hiring marketers. You are getting people who understand business at a fundamental level. Over the years we have worked with clients across almost every industry in some way, shape, or form. That breadth of experience means we understand virtually every business model out there, the target audiences that come with them, and how to speak to those audiences in a way that actually converts. A big part of our strategy is rooted in consumer psychology. We do not just create content that looks good. We create content that is engineered to move people.
On the consulting side, we have done some of our best work with startup clients. Helping early stage businesses not just with their marketing but with their overall business development, how they position themselves, how they structure their offers, and how they build for long term growth.
Our process is built around the client from day one. We start with a deep discovery phase, learning not just your marketing needs but your goals, your ideal customer, and your operational strengths. From there we build the strategy, present it, and see it through from launch to ongoing execution.
What I am most proud of has nothing to do with metrics. It is the relationships we have built with every single client. My goal from day one of any engagement is to break the business and corporate barrier as quickly as possible. Not in a negative way, but I genuinely want to be friends with the people we work with. I never want us to be order takers. If that was the goal, we would have chosen employment over building something of our own.
When you are a business owner who has real friendships with your clients, something shifts. The trust goes deeper. The empathy goes deeper. We grind harder for our clients because we actually want them to win. Not because it looks good on a case study, but because we care about them as people. That is the thing I am most proud of and it is the thing that no competitor can replicate just by copying our services.
We are not your typical agency. We are builders. We are relationship driven, execution obsessed, and we genuinely care about the growth of every business we work with. Whether you are a startup finding your footing or an established company ready to scale, we want to be the team in your corner.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The best advice I can give is simple: do not quit. There were moments where I considered walking away. Stretches where I genuinely thought the business was going to fail. But I refused to let those thoughts affect my ability to show up every day regardless of how I felt. Consistency of effort, even when the results have not shown up yet, is what separates the people who make it from the ones who do not.
Get in front of people. Shake hands, build relationships, and be in person as much as you possibly can. The new generation is so comfortable behind a screen that showing up in person has become a massive competitive advantage. The winners in this game take the most risk and put themselves in the most rooms.
But the thing I wish I knew earlier, the thing I want every person starting out to really hear, is this: treat people how you want to be treated. It sounds simple. But I have been on both ends of it.
I have had incredible experiences with people who poured into me, believed in me, and clapped loud for even the smallest wins. And I have had some terrible experiences that I still think about to this day. Clients who treated me poorly, laughed at what I was building, or made me feel like none of it would ever work. Those moments stuck with me. And instead of becoming bitter, I made a decision to do the exact opposite for everyone around me.
I communicate constantly with my clients and my team. I celebrate the small wins just as loudly as the big ones. A lot of people think I am crazy because I pay my team significantly more than most agencies would for the same hours of work. But I know what it feels like to be underpaid. I know what it feels like to be dismissed. So I choose differently.
I want to be everyone’s biggest cheerleader because I know how hard life can be and how much it means when someone genuinely believes in you. And what I have found is that people recognize that. They feel it. They appreciate it. And more times than I can count, that genuine care has accidentally led to a referral because people want to send business to someone who actually cares.
Prioritize people over profit. The profit will follow.
