Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquenese Roberson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am originally from Oak Cliff, Dallas Tx. Growing up I excelled academically, but I was never encouraged that I could truly become anything I wanted to be.. especially not a business owner. Once I realized that possibility, I devoted countless nights searching for a niche that aligned with my passion and my future vision.
After losing my mother in 2018, I entered a season of self discovery that brought many ancestral blessings and renewed purpose. Hair had always been part of my lineage. My grandmother was a master barber and my mother was a highly respected wig stylist. Continuing that legacy came naturally and it gave birth to my business, Celestial Rootz.
Celestial Rootz is more than hairstyling. It’s a platform to advance black culture, and to keep clients rooted in self love and the divine. The name reflects the family tree, ancestry, and the tree of life itself. I currently operate as a home based salon, my vision extends far beyond that. I am working towards publishing informational books, launching a natural hair care line, and establishing a non profit organization to serve the youth and community.
I firmly believe that what you dedicate your time and InnerG to will grow, and that philosophy continues to guide both my work and my future aspirations.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely not been smooth. In the beginning, one of the biggest struggles was believing in myself and trusting that I was building something meaningful. Coming from a place where entrepreneurship wasn’t often modeled, I had to push past the self doubt and create a new vision for myself.
I also faced challenges such as limited resources, working out a home salon.. and balancing entrepreneurship with family responsibilities. Being a self taught loctician, there were many times I felt overwhelmed, but the struggles taught me patience, discipline, and the importance of faith!
What helped me through is knowing that my work is bigger than ME! Everytime a client sits in my chair, everytime my children watch me build, I am reminded why I can’t give up. The challenges have shaped and molded me into the woman and professional I am today. I now see obstacles not as setbacks, but as stepping stones that continue to build my character, my business, and my legacy.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
As a loctician, and natural care artist, my work goes far beyond styling. It’s about restoration, empowerment, and connection. I specialize in creating healthy, beautiful locs while also educating my clients about the spiritual and cultural significance of their crown. My clients often say that sitting in my chair feels like therapy because I don’t just style hair… I pour love, wisdom, and encouragement into every session.
What sets me apart is the intention behind my work. Celestial Rootz is built on the belief that our hair is more than an appearance, it’s an extension of our identity, our ancestry, and even our spiritual antennas. I take pride in honoring that truth while also delivering professional high quality styles that allow my clients to feel confident and ROOTED!
I am most proud of the community I’ve cultivated through my work. Many of my clients have become family, and together we create a safe place for healing and growth. Each crown I touch is apart of a bigger mission.. which will always be to advance black culture, break generational curses, inspire the children and community to embrace their authentic selves.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I see the natural hair and loc industry expanding far beyond beauty into wellness, culture, and empowerment. More people are beginning to embrace their authentic selves and honor their crowns as spiritual and cultural expressions.. not just hairstyles. I believe there will be a major shift toward holistic care. Products rooted in natural ingredients, rituals that promote self love, and education that connects hair health to overall wellbeing.
I also anticipate more visibility representation for locs in more professional and creative spaces, as society continues to break away from outdated stigmas. With this growth, I see my role as both a stylist and cultural educator becoming more important. Helping clients maintain healthy crowns while creating spaces that celebrate identity, and pass knowledge to the next generation.
The industry is moving towards, authenticity, inclusivity, and wellness. I am super proud to be apart of the shaping of that future.
