Community Highlights: Meet Mason Woodward of Aledo Wrestling Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Woodward.

Hi Mason, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my journey in jiu-jitsu at eight years old and wrestling at eleven, learning early the value of discipline, resilience, and hard work. Years of competing in tournaments shaped not only my skills but my mindset. In high school, that dedication led to a 161–31 record with 139 pins, where I became a four-time state qualifier, two-time state runner-up, and three-time state placer. I competed at the highest levels nationally as well, earning podium finishes at events like Reno Worlds, the Arizona National Showdown, and Tulsa Flo Nationals, along with many other major tournaments along the way. I was also honored as Weatherford Wrestler of the Year four times and named Most Outstanding Wrestler in my district, among many other recognitions throughout my career.

I carried that momentum into college wrestling and reached a national ranking of 6th before an unexpected surgery forced me to step away from competition. While that chapter closed sooner than I planned, it opened another door. I began coaching wrestling and jiu-jitsu during breaks at Genesis Azle and Genesis River Oaks, discovering a passion for helping others grow through the sport that had given me so much. What started as giving back quickly became my purpose, and when Glen Dyson reached out and offered me the opportunity to become head coach at Aledo Wrestling Club, it marked the beginning of a new mission: building champions on and off the mat.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I began coaching and helping others at just 13 years old, learning early that leadership comes with responsibility and sacrifice. Before becoming a head coach, I was already married and supporting my own household, which meant balancing real-life responsibilities while continuing to pursue my passion. There were times when finances were tight, but I stayed committed because I believed in the long-term vision.

Physically, the journey has been demanding as well. I’ve undergone two surgeries, with the possibility of a third in the future, forcing me to navigate setbacks and uncertainty along the way. Stepping into a leadership role at just 22 years old also brought its own challenges, as some people initially questioned my abilities because of my age. Rather than letting that doubt slow me down, I used it as motivation to grow and lead by example. Today, with Aledo Wrestling Club still brand new, we’re focused on building our reputation, getting our name out there, and laying a strong foundation for the future, one athlete at a time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Aledo Wrestling Club?
Aledo Wrestling Club is built on the belief that wrestling is for everyone. We offer a welcoming, high-level training environment for athletes of all backgrounds and experience levels—from kids as young as three years old to seniors in high school. We specialize in developing multi-sport athletes who want to learn wrestling, improve their competitiveness, and build skills that carry over into every sport and area of life.

What sets us apart is our year-round commitment to athlete development. Our athletes don’t just show up for a season—we train consistently, with purpose, and with a team that is fully invested in their growth. In addition to team practices, we offer one-on-one training and individualized strength and conditioning, supported by a fully furnished free-weight gym. This allows us to focus on proper technique, physical development, and injury prevention while building confidence and mental toughness.

Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the culture we’re creating. Even though we’re a new program, we’re building something special—an environment rooted in discipline, accountability, and passion. Our goal is not only to produce successful wrestlers, but to develop strong, resilient individuals. We want our athletes and families to know that when they walk through our doors, they’re joining a community that is invested in their long-term success, both on and off the mat.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’ve been fortunate to learn from a lot of great coaches and mentors along the way, especially Karen Banes, John Mance, Todd Olson, Gary Heard, and Glen Dyson. Their influence shaped how I coach, lead, and approach building something meaningful.

Right now, the best way to work with or support us is by being part of the journey as we continue to grow. Families can get involved by trusting us with their athletes and committing to the process. Coaches and organizations who value long-term development are welcome to connect for clinics, training opportunities, or collaborative events. Community support—whether through word of mouth, local partnerships, or showing up to support our athletes—goes a long way as we continue establishing ourselves.

We’re focused on steady growth, strong relationships, and doing things the right way, and we’re always open to connecting with people who believe in what we’re building.
