Today we’d like to introduce you to Maye Knighten.
Hi Maye, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was introduced to the Insurance Industry while going thru a divorce after a 20 year marriage. I got married right after graduating high school. I spent those 20 years supporting my husband’s engineering career and raising a family being fully dependent on him. So here I was 20 years later, facing a divorce with no career. Out of fairness and respect for each other, we stayed together 2 years after our divorce (ikr). During that period we both received our Life & Health Insurance License. This span of time gave us both the opportunity to gather ourselves and form some sense of stabilty within our own existance. I worked as a captive Medicare agent for 6 years learning the Medicare Insurance Industry. In 2013, the company I worked for made drastic managerial changes and I knew it was time for me to launch out and start my own agency thus Knighten Insurance was born.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
From day one, I’ve specialized in Medicare which is a a govenment health insurance program therefore it is constantly changing. Annual insurance carrier and government Certifications; strict Compliance rules to protect Medicare beneficiaries; changing Commission structures; narrowing Medical/Provider Networks. So yes, lots of ongoing obstacles and challenges yet my GREAT love and understanding of the Medicare Industry makes it all worthwhile.
As you know, we’re big fans of Knighten Insurance. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a licensed Insurance Broker that specializes in Medicare. Nineteen years ago, when I started my Insurance career, I was introduced to the Medicare market. I had only planned to let this be a means of “getting my feet wet” in the Insurance industry. Yet little did I know. I would fall in love working with seniors…it just felt like home.
What sets me apart is that I am NOT a “sales agent”. It has never been or ever will be about a “sell” for me. It’s all about educating Who Medicare is and How it Works. I turn prospects into clients/family. Upon meeting me, they can immediately sense my sincerity and love for this industry along with exceptional knowledge and experience. In 2020, with COVID on the scene, I was forced to start conducting virtual monthly educational “Turning 65/Retiring” Workshops. To this day, they are still a success. The Workshops are an informal setting where we cover the Basics of Medicare; discuss your various options and your next step(s) in applying for Medicare benefits based on your needs. No worries, I hold your hand through the entire process and beyond.
When I can turn a confused look into a smile that’s when I know I’ve done my job well. A large percentage of my clients have been with me since day one. No matter how large Knighten Insurance has grown through the years, my clients know that I am only a phone call or email away. I solely specialize in Medicare as to remain Updated, Trained, Certified and Compliant in this, seemingly complex, industry. You can always count on my Knowledge, my Caring Spirit and Welcoming Smile.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Let faith and confidence lead you! Never give in to doubt or fear. I was 47 when I launched out and started Knighten Insurance. Most would have deemed I was too “old” to start over yet I had a vision as to how I needed and wanted my future to look so I pushed forward. A great way to start out is to shadow a successful individual or work for a company in the industry you are considering and learn all you can. Go easy on yourself and don’t expect overnight success.
