Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Barrios Jones.
Hi Melanie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in a household where we were taught an honest dollar made is an honest dollar earned and I began working at the ripe old age of 16. My first job was with my brother’s home improvement company where I learned the most important lesson of my life and that was the value of relationships. I’ve been a people person ever since. It made no difference if I was in sales, managing editor of a medical journal, a financial advisor or business owner, every success I’ve ever had has been a direct result of my ability to build relationships.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
If anyone tells you their road has been easy and smooth is either lying or has sold their soul to the devil. One of the biggest struggles was leaving my job as a financial advisor to pursue entrepreneurship. I was the breadwinner at the time but my husband supported my decision and he has had my back the entire journey. Being self-employed is challenging in so many ways because you wear all the hats and it takes time to build your business. There were a couple of times when I thought the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze but giving up isn’t really in my DNA so that was short lived.

What makes you happy?
My children make me happy. I’m so proud of them. They truly are my greatest accomplishment. Nothing I’ve done compares to the joy I get from watching my children be good humans. My youngest is on the autism spectrum and he is the most emotionally intelligent, empathetic, kind, sweet, caring person I’ve ever met. He brings out the best in everyone who has the pleasure of being in his presence. My eldest was a division one athlete and has a masters degree. She says she was put on this earth to be her brother’s big sister. One of the Ten Commandments is to honor they father and thy mother and what that means is to be more than respectful with your words. It means to lead your life in such a way that when other people encounter you, they are awed by what a good person you are and that is a direct reflection on how you were raised. Both my kids honor me everyday and they are my pride and joy.
