Today we’d like to introduce you to Mrs. Oluwabunmi.
Hi Mrs., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved from Nigeria to the U.S. in 2018, carrying more than just luggage; I carried the flavors, traditions, and warmth of home. When I settled in Dallas, I realized there was a real gap for authentic Nigerian food prepared with care, intention, and consistency.
Back in Lagos, I trained as a baker, where I learned to bake cakes because I grew up in a home where my mom loved to bake. She would bake the most delicious cakes, cook, and we never ran out of great snacks and food. So it built my passion, wanting me to learn more, how to decorate for myself or people around me. Then, in university, I started to bake while studying biological science. This process shaped me. It taught me discipline, patience, and the importance of process in the kitchen. With cakes, you can’t rush the process; we all know you have to select the best ingredients as well. That foundation shaped how I approach food today. What started as cooking for friends and family slowly grew into something bigger. People kept saying, “This food is so good, it’s LickFinger worthy,” and that’s how LickFinger was born.
By 2019, LickFinger became more than just food; it became a way to serve culture, memories, and joy to a growing community in Dallas.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been smooth, and I don’t think meaningful journeys ever are. Starting as an immigrant entrepreneur came with challenges, limited resources, learning the U.S. business system, balancing quality with growth, and building trust from the ground up. There were moments of doubt, long hours, and plenty of learning curves. But every challenge strengthened the brand and clarified the vision. Those struggles taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of staying true to my values.
We’ve been impressed with Lickfinger Kitchen LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
LickFinger is a Dallas-based food brand rooted in Nigerian cuisine with an Afro-fusion twist. We specialize in freshly prepared meals, including signature dishes like our Jollof Fusion Bowl, handcrafted small chops, and curated food experiences, as well as sauces and spice blends.
What sets us apart is our commitment to doing things the right way, using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, cooking food fresh daily, and creating recipes that honor tradition while embracing creativity. Every dish is intentional. We don’t cut corners, and we don’t follow trends just to fit in.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was the kind of kid that already “knew what I wanted” and yes… I was stubborn Like, if I said I was going to do something, I was doing it. No negotiation. My family will tell you I didn’t just have opinions… I had final decisions 😂.
Personality-wise, I was curious, observant, and always paying attention to details. I liked things done properly; if something didn’t look right or taste right, I would keep working at it until it did. I wasn’t the loudest in the room, but I was definitely the one quietly studying everything.
Interest-wise, food was always around me because my mom loved baking and cooking, and that rubbed off on me early. I grew up in a home where everyone in the family cooked. We always had snacks, something on the stove, and cakes that tasted like love. So I naturally started developing that passion, learning how to bake, decorate, and eventually experimenting on my own. I was the kid who would rather be in the kitchen trying something new than outside doing long talk.
