Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Davis.
Hi Nicole, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
After working in corporate America for over 15 years, I decided to leap from a financially cushiony but stressful career to pursue my passion for becoming a therapist. Before COVID, I enrolled in a local master’s Program for Professional Counseling. Eventually, I discovered the private group practice in Oak Cliff that would become my playground for fostering my new career.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My struggles started and ended with my previous career. I decided to go after what I thought would be a lucrative career path after college, ended up doing something I was good at, and after so much time had passed, I started to feel the strain of being unable to make an impact. The stress of climbing the corporate ladder taught me several lessons about leadership, management, and the importance of having a good work-life balance, but I was never fulfilled in my work.
Deciding to change careers was challenging until it became the only logical option I had left. Stress was at an all-time high, and I began to have panic attacks while at work.
When your body starts talking to you, LISTEN! Like in everything, the signs are always there, but you must pay attention.
I felt the tug to leave for many years but didn’t feel I had the direction forward. Once I was brought back to the idea of going back to school for a career in counseling, I immediately got flashing “green flags” that I was heading in the right direction. My path became easy, and every step fell quickly into place.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a Certified Trauma Professional, I enjoy working with adults, specifically middle-aged men, women of all ages, and couples. My clients have a history of childhood/generational trauma, anxiety and depression.
You can expect to see me in a graphic tee with a positive message + a pair of Chuck Taylors. I love a good graphic tee and intentionally wear positive messages I secretly want to channel to my clients with each visit. This is a form of self-expression for me, and who doesn’t love a good t-shirt with a positive affirmation or mantra?!
My approach to therapy is rather eclectic, so depending on the client, I seek the best method that is most effective for them. I’m different from the typical therapist who will sit and listen without offering much feedback. My goal is to provide an environment that helps my clients feel comfortable sharing their inner worlds and exploring their best next steps. To make that happen, I am okay with sharing tidbits of my journey to normalize the human experience. Healing requires that we connect with others while learning new skills.
Therapists are human too, and from my experience, it’s helpful to sit with a trained expert who has lived experiences that can relate to my own. Connecting with the right therapist is crucial for the therapeutic process to work.
I aim to make the therapy experience less scary, relate to my clients, and accompany them on their path to healing.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success, for me, is being happy with who I see when I look in the mirror. It’s not something that can be measured on the outside but is felt. When I am proud of my personal or professional decisions, I consider that a gauge for ‘success.’ Some may call it alignment or congruence when your actions align with your thoughts and feelings. That is my version of success!
