Today we’d like to introduce you to Penny Horton.
Hi Penny, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
After being the first person in my family to graduate college (Wichita State University) I entered the workforce with a role in a social services organization and quickly discovered that without being a licensed social worker there was little room for advancement. I decided to go back to school and pursue a master’s degree in organization development which opened the door to my career of human resources. After spending fifteen years in corporate America and rising through the ranks up to the role of Vice President of Human Resources I had an opportunity launch my own business. Something I had dreamt about for years. In May of 2018, I launched my hr. consulting gig as a solopreneur and since that time have expanded to add 2 full-time and 2 part-time staff to my firm, Who’s Your HR? which has offices both in Tulsa, OK, and Ft. Smith, AR. Today, we serve clients across nearly every industry, ranging from very small businesses to large businesses from coast to coast with full-cycle human resources consulting and outsourcing services. Our goal is to expand to 10 locations by 2031.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would be shocked if anyone told me the road to launching their business was smooth! Besides the impact of a global pandemic that 2020 brought and the subsequent staffing issues that have ensued for nearly every employer since there have been challenges most entrepreneurs experience such as deciding when to hire, juggling how to do the day-to-day work for clients versus working on the business, having steady revenue flow and learning functions of the business that you previously didn’t know about like marketing, IT and more.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our vision is to unburden employers everywhere of their people-related problems.
In today’s ever-changing employment law landscape, with the continued emphasis on company culture and the competitive nature of the existing work environment, the role of human resources management has become increasingly important and increasingly complex.
Navigating the legal complexities of employment and compliance often requires dedicated subject matter expertise as well as dedicated time and effort. For many businesses, having a full-time HR department fully staffed with the level of depth, knowledge, and skill required to meet all of today’s challenging demands can be an extremely expensive undertaking.
Many functions, such as cleaning, accounting, IT services, and marketing are often outsourced. Doing so often makes good financial and business sense, allowing those within the organization to focus on what they do best.
Who’s Your HR? (WYHR) offers relief from the administrative burden, mitigation of risk, legal compliance and provides a high level of subject matter expertise across the disciplines of HR through project-based assistance, ad hoc and on-demand HR support, and consultative services for all sizes of businesses. Our mission is to help businesses skillfully navigate the legal complexities of being an employer, optimize their workforce, and handle their HR needs by providing superior customer service, expert guidance, and advice on the raw, unfiltered truth about human resources.
We will empower an employer’s success by mitigating employment-related risk, implementing effective human capital strategies, and ensuring legal and regulatory compliance.
WYHR staff are not only academically trained and professionally certified but who also have multiple years of true hands-on HR experience across a variety of industries, in a variety of different-sized organizations, both internationally and domestically.
We aren’t selling software or some HR-related system that comes with “HR support” or access to some generic document library. We work directly with you, week in and week out providing specific, subject matter expertise and practical solutions to help you mitigate risk and achieve business goals.
