Hi Rachel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sure, no problem! My name is Rachel Cardenas, and I am the owner and Creator of What’s Up, Dallas! Magazine; a hidden gem in DFW. I began my journey with my magazine in September of 2022 and it has been such a joy to have in my life. I started as a magazine geared to feature small business owners and their stories of how their businesses succeeded in their journey hoping to inspire others that may want to do the same thing in their business goals.
What’s Up, Dallas! Magazine has been going for nearly 2 years now, and we are now so much more than that! We are a full- fledged media business and all over DFW promoting family-friendly content and events. We now cover networking events, fashion shows, concerts, and local talent stories, and businesses in the metroplex. We now have reached over 200k in accounts since we began, and our readers and followers are truly organic.
This year we gravited to offering our YouTube content to our listeners with our Spotify channel: What’s Up, Dallas! Magazine Show. Our goals is to inspire and motivate more positivity in the metroplex with testimonies, success stories, and events that not only inspire but also make your feel good to read or listen to.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
What’s Up, Dallas! Magazine’s journey has not been without difficulty to be honest. We have learned to navigate around negative businesses and ill-association within the community to keep the brand’s name and purpose on point. There have been times where people would try to pay largely to be featured, but their content was not in alignment with the magazine and it’s readers. So, we had to deny them an article and could not promote them.
The real struggle is being a media company that only carries positive messages and stories! I mean, look around you in all this world; people thrive on negative content, impure content, violence, and what negativity can be talked about. When was the last you heard some truly good news, or representation of an event on a media outlet? That is what What’s Up, Dallas! Magazine is here for! We spotlight teens, businesses, events, organizations that we considered the underdogs in the metroplex; the real unsung heroes in DFW.

What’s Up, Dallas! Magazine is a local DFW magazine that is available print by request and all-over social media. We can be found by searching: What’s Up, Dallas! Magazine or on social media @whatsupdallasmagazine. The principal office in located in North Dallas in the Lake Highlands Area and we travel all over the metroplex to events happening near you.
The magazine is online for readers as well at www.whatsupdallasmagazine.com where you can see all that we do including interviews and articles. The magazine was created by Rachel Cardenas, a local in the metroplex with the goal to inspire others in their business journey but has bloomed to so much more within the past 18 months. What sets What’s Up, Dallas! Magazine apart from others is the purpose, providing only positive content to the metroplex and the owner is involved in everything that happens with the magazine.
Being a mom herself, Rachel is always careful about what content the magazine offers to the public and whether it can cater to all ages of people. What’s Up, Dallas! Magazine offers just that, age appropriate, family-friendly interviews, good vibe social media messages, articles, and episodes on YouTube & Spotify. Every article & Interview is personally handled by Rachel because she cares about the young minds that read and listen to the content.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe in luck, but I do believe that if you stay true to your purpose and goals, the right path will be found in your journey. Every moment I invest in my magazine has either been a lesson of experience or a lesson to better my path in the business. I know that a name is powerful, and people associate names with everything. My magazine’s name What’s Up, Dallas! Magazine is all about the positive voice in DFW. I value every connection or blessing that I have in this journey and look forward to working with more individuals to bring this goal to fruition.
Since I began this magazine, I always wanted to stay true to the purpose ‘being a positive source of info for DFW” and I have been true to it so far. I am not going to lie, as a business owner I have my financial struggles and hard times, but I never wavered to take the easy route. I stay loyal, faithful, that my purpose is being heard even if it only a few that see it. A positive message can change even one person’s day for the better, than I am good with that.
