Community Highlights: Meet Rosie & James Brunder of Frituwhaaa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosie & James Brunder.

Hi Rosie & James, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We the Brunder’s, crafted in the heart of New York City and nurtured by the rich heritage of the Dominican Republic. With 23 bustling years in NYC and another 18 in Pennsylvania, we’ve now set our roots in the vibrant DFW Metroplex.

Our journey is a fusion of faith, love, and a passion for Caribbean flavors. Inspired by the lively Dominican fritura, we bring a burst of flavor to the DFW community.

From our humble beginnings in Justin’s home kitchen, we’ve been embraced by the warmth and support of our neighbors. Now, we’re thrilled to serve up a taste of the Dominican Republic in Roanoke, TX too!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting our small business hasn’t been without its challenges. As a one–income household, balancing our responsibilities has required a lot of sacrifice and faith. My husband, who also works as a loan officer, has had to divide his time between his career and helping run Frituwhaaa — which often means long days and late nights.

We deeply value family time and serving at our church, but growing this business has meant making some tough choices and cutting back in other areas. Through it all, we’ve held tight to our faith, knowing that if it weren’t for God’s grace, we wouldn’t be where we are today. The sleepless nights and moments of uncertainty have been real, but so has our determination — and every challenge has brought us closer to our dream.

We’ve been impressed with Frituwhaaa, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our business, FrituWhaaa, is a vibrant Dominican food concept located in a local food hall, bringing authentic Caribbean flavors to the Dallas–Fort Worth community. We specialize in traditional Dominican street food with a modern twist—crispy frituras, flavorful empanadas, and signature dishes that highlight the culture and comfort of the island.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, my husband and I were both surrounded by family, food, and tradition. In our homes, the kitchen wasn’t just a place to cook — it was where life happened. It’s where laughter filled the air, where stories were shared, and where love was passed down from one generation to the next through every meal. Those moments shaped who we are and inspired the passion that drives us today.

We’ve always shared a love for people and the joy that comes from feeding others. My husband has a warm, welcoming spirit — he can make anyone feel like family. I’m more of the creative one, always paying attention to the little details that make each dish special. Together, we balance each other perfectly, both in life and in business.

What started as a dream has grown into our purpose: to share the flavors we grew up with, celebrate our Dominican culture, and give back to the community that continues to believe in us.. For us, food is more than just something you eat — it’s a way of connecting, remembering, and loving. And as we feed people’s stomachs we also use the opportunity to feed their souls with the word of God.
