Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Legesse.

Ruth Legesse

Hi Ruth, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.

My story begins in Nairobi, Kenya, where I was born and raised. In 2004, my immediate family and I moved to the United States, seeking better educational opportunities. From third grade through twelfth grade, I attended a predominantly white Christian private school. I always had a passion for fashion and beauty, specifically my natural hair. Throughout my high school education, I always kept my hair straight in order to fit in and look like all the other girls in my school. My hair became extremely heat-damaged and broken. In 2016, after graduating high school, I dove into the natural hair community and completely transformed my hair. During my freshman year of college, I discovered a passion for braiding hair. I saw how important it was to create protective hairstyles for Black girls, allowing them to embrace their natural beauty while maintaining healthy hair. If I could do it, then I could help so many women accomplish healthy long hair. This became more than just a way to earn money—it became a purpose-driven mission to empower young black women and celebrate our culture.

My journey to becoming a successful hairstylist began in 2018 when I started my business, Lux Legacy Boutique, formerly known as Ruthless Styles. I focused on providing hairstyling services to college students, women and men. I built my clientele through social media, word of mouth, and networking, which helped me gain traction quickly. This early success fueled my passion for entrepreneurship and hairstyling.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?

My journey wasn’t without challenges. When COVID-19 hit, I had to pause my business and rethink my career path. I considered different options, like studying for the GRE to pursue a career as a physician assistant and applying for marketing jobs. Despite exploring these alternatives, they didn’t resonate with me the way entrepreneurship did. I knew that my passion lay in empowering women through hair and creating a sense of confidence and beauty. I wanted to build a legacy that I would be remembered for and encourage other women to pursue their dreams. During this time I created a business plan and studied other entrepreneurs, marketing strategies, and the other competitors in my area.

In 2021, I returned to hairstyling and experienced significant success by following through with my plan and offering the best customer service. This success encouraged me to continue offering high-quality services and selling hair extensions to protect and enhance natural beauty. Today, I am a six-figure hairstylist, proud to connect with and empower women everyday.
