Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Dillingham
Hi Sara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began shortly after COVID, during a time when I was running a small cookie business and realized I needed to make significant changes for my health. A friend, who was a coach at Row House, encouraged me to take a part-time position at the front desk in the early mornings before starting my workday. Although I had never worked out regularly or been in a gym much, I began rowing and quickly discovered its accessibility, effectiveness, and unique appeal. Rowing provided a welcoming environment that was unlike a traditional gym, and it allowed me to challenge myself physically while feeling comfortable and supported.
Within two months of starting, I completed a half marathon on the erg and developed a consistent fitness routine, working out 4-5 days a week and steadily losing weight. Inspired by my progress, my husband joined as well, and together, we decided to explore franchise opportunities. In 2022, we purchased the Row House studio in Frisco, TX, where I had worked and trained. Despite our experience as business owners, entering the fitness industry was new territory, but we were driven by our belief in the modality and its transformative potential, especially for individuals in mid-life.
With the guidance of our Lead Coach, Lori Verta, who shares a passion for health and longevity, we began exploring ways to enhance our offerings. Recognizing a growing demand among members for a more comprehensive workout experience, we developed a proposal to introduce small group strength training. After a year of planning and collaboration, our studio was approved as the pilot location for this program, making us the first Row House studio to offer it.
We are proud to provide not only innovative fitness solutions but also curated partnerships that support members in areas such as nutrition, helping them achieve their health and wellness goals in a holistic way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like many in the fitness industry, we’ve encountered our share of challenges, particularly navigating the evolving landscape of health and wellness trends. Adapting to these changes has required us to remain flexible and forward-thinking, ensuring we continually meet the needs of our members. On a personal level, transitioning into the operations of a larger business has been both challenging and rewarding. Managing everything from logistics to long-term strategy has been a steep but fulfilling learning curve.
One of the most significant hurdles we’ve faced has been staffing our studio with the best talent to lead classes. This challenge was particularly acute following COVID, as many fitness professionals had to pivot to different careers. Finding instructors who are not only skilled but also passionate about connecting with and inspiring our members has been critical to maintaining the culture of accountability and support that sets our studio apart. Despite these obstacles, we’ve built a strong team that shares our vision and continues to elevate the member experience.
As you know, we’re big fans of Row House West Frisco. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Our studio is more than just a place to work out—it’s a space where individuals can take ownership of their fitness journey in a supportive and results-driven environment. At Row House Frisco, we specialize in low-impact, high-intensity rowing classes designed to improve cardiovascular health, strength, and endurance. However, we’ve recently expanded our offerings to include small group strength training, recovery/stretching classes, and personal training, creating a comprehensive fitness experience for our members.
What truly sets us apart is our focus on accountability and personalized attention, which we believe are essential for long-term success. Unlike larger gyms that prioritize volume, we emphasize quality interactions with every member. Our team is passionate about helping individuals navigate the unique challenges of mid-life health, such as hormonal changes and maintaining longevity.
We’re proud to be the first Row House studio to pilot small group strength training, a program that fills a crucial gap for our members. It represents our commitment to evolving with their needs while staying true to the values of inclusivity, accessibility, and empowerment. We want your readers to know that no matter where they are on their fitness journey, our studio is here to guide, support, and celebrate them every step of the way.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is one of the most valuable skills you can develop, both for business and personal growth. My advice is to always be open to sharing your business with others. You never know who might be a source of support, insight, or opportunity. Networking isn’t just about what others can do for you—it’s also about being willing to assist and support others. Building relationships based on mutual respect and generosity often leads to partnerships and connections that are beneficial in the long run.
When we were starting out, organizations like SCORE were invaluable. They paired us with an expert who guided us through the franchise process and introduced us to other professionals. This experience taught me that reaching out for help and seeking mentorship is an essential part of growth.
One practical tip I’ve found helpful is keeping an in-depth spreadsheet of contacts. Over time, your network can grow quickly, and having an organized way to track connections makes it easier to revisit your circle when a new opportunity or need arises. This system has allowed us to identify and nurture partnerships that align with our goals, and it’s been an indispensable tool for our business.
