Community Highlights: Meet Sean Chalaki of GoSuits Personal Injury and Accident Lawyers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Chalaki.

Hi Sean, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The ambitions of becoming a tech giant led to being devastatingly crushed by the tech giants. This led to me pursuing a career in law. I started my legal career in Virginia, back when Sprint PCS was still around and touch screen phones were on the precipice. I lived on one top of the mountains with barely any cell reception. Sprint actually provided service, but had roaming charges. At the time they had a plan that advertised free roaming. I used my cell phone freely, and 11 months later I got a bill for $3,200.00 in roaming charges.

At that time, I was also being sued by a giant tech company because they wanted my patents. As a law student, I was swimming in attorney fees while trying not to lose the rights to all of my work. I was shocked and confused. I didn’t have $3200 laying around, and I didn’t understand why my bill was so high. Turns out that there was fine print in the Sprint PCS contract (that no one ever got a copy of) that stated if you’re roaming more than 80% of the time then free roaming wouldn’t apply.

That was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. I spent my last year of law school preparing to sue Sprint. I graduated and moved to Texas, took the Bar, and sent a final DTPA demand to Sprint PCS as a licensed attorney. At this point, I had lost everything I had. I couldn’t care less. I rented an office in the basement of a building with no windows. I used my old law school laptop to work, and got a used desk that I bought for fifteen dollars. I paid the state of Texas $308 to establish my law firm, and spent $80.00 to print business cards. I literally gave my card to anybody who had a pulse.

I was being bullied by the big guys, and I had no money. I didn’t have much motivation to grow my business, I just wanted to win against Sprint. And I did. I won a $69,000 settlement based on their attempt to defraud me. The victory felt good and provided a much needed boost to my motivation. I used the new funds to grow my business. From that day forward, I decided I always wanted to represent the underdogs. I tried practicing other areas of law, but ultimately felt that they were not for me. I found my passion representing consumers against giant conglomerates, and built a multi-state litigation practice that boasts four partners across four states, Texas, California, Illinois, and New York.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
