In the heart of New Jersey, my journey began in a vibrant yellow house. It was here that I learned to discern the significance of colors and patterns in my life. Yellow, a hue symbolizing intellect, creativity, and the power of persuasion, illuminated my path towards progress. Research reinforces that yellow is synonymous with clarity of thought.
In today’s world, opinions abound, yet I’ve come to understand that not all suggestions are worth embracing. One memory stands out from my high school days: I received advice from a counselor to seek employment in a clothing store for the sake of fashionable attire.
While the compliment was appreciated, I realized the limitations of such counsel. As women, our worth extends beyond appearances; it lies in the value we bring through our voices and solutions.
Similar to its peculiar location, expectations for students at that school were modest. When contemplating higher education, a male counselor suggested a path I found inconceivable—having multiple children for financial support. This moment echoed the spirit of Maya Angelou’s poem, and I made a choice to rise above such static circumstances.
Deep within, I knew I was destined for greater accomplishments. The key was to introspect and identify my true capabilities. It became clear that the opinions of others should never dictate my path. Knowing oneself and understanding what one stands for is pivotal. These convictions shape what we accept and what we refuse to tolerate.
Maya Angelou once urged, “If you don’t like something, change it.” Frustrated by a career that demanded more of me than it was willing to compensate, I recognized the need for transformation. I turned to God in prayer, seeking guidance and making a promise to help others if I received the assistance I needed.
With newfound determination, I delved into research, seeking avenues that aligned with my passions and provided financial stability.
With the help of God, I’ve shattered the ceiling of limitations that society imposed on me. The growth I envisioned back then has become a reality, underscoring the principle that where you invest your energy, there will be growth.
As Oprah Winfrey wisely noted, when you vocalize your desires or beliefs, you’re not only sending a message to the world but also reaffirming it to yourself. My journey has been one of self-discovery and breaking free from stereotypes. I hope my story inspires you to embrace your uniqueness and pursue your dreams, regardless of societal expectations. Remember, with God all things are possible! Matthew 19:26
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life is a journey, and my process to progress. Has had its share of ups and downs. One particular encounter at Walmart stands out as a pivotal moment. I found myself in a situation where I had to count my change to pay for groceries. It was a moment that left me feeling embarrassed and vulnerable.
I couldn’t help but notice a long line of onlookers. The restlessness in the air seemed to grow with every coin I counted. Behind me, a man and his son were audibly sighing in impatience. The man, somewhat sternly, told his son to be quiet and then looked over at me, urging me to take my time.
In my career, as I progressed in my career, I encountered different challenges. One recurring situation was being asked to serve on multiple boards to share my ideas. While these opportunities acknowledged the value I possess, they didn’t always lead to the recognition and compensation I deserved.
