Hi Shemika, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Like many people, my relationship with taxes started from confusion and a lot of unanswered questions. Every year, I would walk into a tax office, hand over my paperwork, and hope for the best. I did not fully understand my finances, why certain numbers were what they were, or what I was really paying for. I remember feeling uneasy signing documents without truly understanding them, but assuming that was just how the process worked.
Over time, I realized how common that experience is. So many people are doing their best and still feel uncertain about their financial decisions simply because no one ever took the time to explain things clearly. That realization stayed with me and became the reason I decided to enter the tax industry.
As I began learning, I made a commitment to continuous education so I could truly understand the rules, the strategy behind them, and how they affect real people. The more I learned, the more I saw how fear and confusion lead to missed opportunities and unnecessary stress.
Today, my work is centered on education as much as preparation. I make it a priority to explain fees, outcomes, and options in a way that feels approachable and empowering. I want clients to walk away confident, not confused.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, but the challenges were necessary. Early on, one of the biggest hurdles was building trust in an industry where people often come in with fear or confusion around their finances. This is a field where individuals must be willing to share deeply personal financial information, and earning that level of trust requires consistency, transparency, and time.
Another challenge was keeping up with constant changes in tax laws while growing the business. Balancing ongoing education with client work was demanding, especially in the early stages.
I also had to shift client expectations. Many people were used to a transactional tax experience with little explanation. Focusing on education and clear communication required more effort, but it proved invaluable. When clients understand their finances, they feel more confident, stay engaged, and build long term relationships.
Those challenges shaped how Vertex Consulting Services operates today. By prioritizing education and customer experience, we have built stronger trust, increased loyalty, and created better outcomes for our clients year round.

I have experienced firsthand how prioritizing clarity and customer experience leads to stronger relationships. Today, the majority of our client base consists of returning clients and referrals, which reinforces that excellent service is the foundation of sustainable growth.
