Community Highlights: Meet Solomon Tention of SIM Companies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Solomon Tention.

Hi Solomon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Solomon Tention, originally from Georgia. I am currently a college administrator, professor, author, and entrepreneur. A story that not a lot of people know is that I actually never wanted to go into education. My goal was to be a Family Law Attorney. However, life has a way of shifting us towards our purpose we just have to answer the call. My start in education came from my time interning within the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga. These types of experiences planted the seeds of which I would later discover as my purpose. My life’s mission is focused on building ecosystems to help men of color, educators, leaders, and scholars thrive and experience holistic success

I enjoy many of the freedoms of entrepreneurship. I have enjoyed the many possibilities entrepreneurship provides to create, take risks, to drive ideas through. It’s been great to see the current impact that “The Solomon Tention Brand” and my consulting firm, SIM Companies has already made within urban communities around the world. However, with everything comes responsibility and obligation – with customers, colleagues, shareholders, stakeholders.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I launched my first book series entitled the King in Me with a focus empowering men of color to discover who they are, and what they love and desire out of life. “The King in Me” is a three-part series of beautifully illustrated journals and practical guides designed to help men of color discover their life’s purpose through self-exploration, healing, and personal development. My podcast entitled. “The Solomon Tention Podcast”. My podcast explores questions about human experience, leadership, entrepreneurship, and culture. Listeners can subscribe to the “The Solomon Tention Podcast” on all major podcast streaming and download platforms including Greenroom, Amazon Audible, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and many more.  I also have created the Mancave Estore a Lifestyle Brand for men where we provide luxury lifestyle products for the modern gentleman. Finally, I am also the CEO of a federal contracting agency, SIM Companies where our mission is to advance the urban community through education, workforce development, business, and philanthropy. We are focused primarily on engaging consulting projects that address a variety of generational cycles within the urban community. Our vision is to inspire, educate, connect, and motivate our clients to reach their fullest potential.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Looking back, what would you do differently when you first founded the company? Six months after building the framework, strategically build a brand before ever attempting to focus on sales. It’s important that individuals can connect with you well before you begin to sale any type of products or services. I also believe that securing more capital to help with start-up costs- perhaps spending 6 months to secure capital would’ve been a strategy to implement prior to launching this business. I’ve also learned that your business will require you to get out of your comfort zone in order to be successful and would encourage others to be prepared to be all in to ensure your business is a success.
