Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonia Flaherty.
Hi Sonia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up in Toronto, Canada, in an Italian household, everything has always revolved around food for my family. Our gatherings were focused on eating, and even quality time with my parents was all about canning, cooking, and baking something yummy. Food was the core of my life, the central foundation of my being. I never counted calories, did not entertain diets, nor even thought of the consequences of too much food in my life. I got married at 23 years old and wanted nothing more than to have a large family of my own one day. That dream was crushed after experiencing several miscarriages, and I was told I was unable to have children.
After much heartache and sad days, I decided it was time for me to start taking care of my health.
So, at 26 years old, that’s when my fitness journey began.
I developed a love for health and began to feel confident and strong that I had a burning passion to want to help others.
Today, I currently reside in Dallas, Texas, and continue to do what I love.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Where food had always played a central role in our Italian culture, I had to make it know to my family at our gatherings that I would choose to eat alternative foods because taking care of my health was my personal responsibility. At first, they didn’t understand, but over the years of setting the example and educating them they themselves have made changes.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Get Strong with Sonia?

What matters most to you?
Now at 52 years old, what matters most is to get my message across to women that it’s ok to take some time to yourself. Self-care is not a bad thing; in fact, it is crucial for overall well-being. Taking time for oneself helps manage stress, promotes mental health, and enhances resilience. It involves activities that recharge you emotionally, physically, and mentally. Practicing self-care can improve productivity, boost self-esteem, and contribute to maintaining healthy relationships. Prioritizing self-care is a positive and necessary aspect of maintaining a balanced and fulfilling life.
