Today we’d like to introduce you to Susana Munoz.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a first-generation Latina, a mother, and a therapist, and my own healing journey began in motherhood. Becoming a parent brought old wounds, inherited expectations, and patterns I learned in order to survive into much clearer focus. I became determined not to pass that pain down, and that intention continues to guide the work I do today.
I started Luciana Mental Health because I believe therapy can be a powerful space to break cycles and reconnect with yourself. So many people move through life carrying emotional weight, cultural expectations, and roles that no longer fit. Therapy offers a place to slow down, set some of that down, and begin living in a way that feels more honest and aligned.
Luciana Mental Health is named after my grandmother Luciana, whose strength and perseverance laid the foundation for generations of women in my family. My other grandmother, Juana, is honored through the flowers in our logo, which reflect Mexican culture and the tradition of embroidery. For me, embroidery represents healing as a process of reconnecting, restoring, and honoring every thread of our story.
Because of the sacrifices of the women who came before me, I now hold the privilege of challenging cultural messages like “feelings are weak,” “you must always put others before yourself,” and “asking for help is a sign of failure.” My children will grow up knowing that emotional safety matters just as much as physical safety, and that healing is something we are allowed to choose.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. I always knew I wanted my own practice, but I carried a lot of fear around starting a business and relying solely on myself. Growing up, I watched my father dabble in entrepreneurship but never fully dive in because of the pressure to provide for his family. He moved out on his own at just ten years old, so survival was always at the forefront for him. That fear of instability is something I inherited, even if I didn’t realize it at the time.
Ironically, it was becoming a mother that finally pushed me to take the leap. Before starting Luciana Mental Health, I was a clinic director at a larger mental health practice, and I genuinely enjoyed that role. I loved leadership, building teams, and supporting clinicians. But I also found myself wanting more time with my children and more presence in my own life. I didn’t want to feel like I was always working or emotionally split between roles.
I also wanted to create a space where I could intentionally shape the culture, both for clients and for peers, in a way that felt aligned with my values. Letting go of security and stepping into ownership was uncomfortable, but it felt necessary. In many ways, opening my own practice was not just a professional decision, but a personal one. It was about choosing growth over fear and modeling for my children that it is possible to build something meaningful without living in constant survival mode.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Luciana Mental Health, I help individuals navigate life’s challenges with compassion, clarity, and confidence. I work with people who are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected and who want to better understand themselves, their relationships, and the patterns shaping their lives.
I support clients through a wide range of concerns, including anxiety and chronic overwhelm, trauma and complex PTSD, ADHD, multicultural and first-generation identity, pregnancy and postpartum transitions, self-esteem and perfectionism, relationship challenges and infidelity, parenting and cycle-breaking, eating disorders and body image concerns, mood and personality disorders, and depression. Rather than relying on a single therapeutic style, I meet clients where they are and use an integrative approach that is responsive to each person’s needs.
What sets Luciana Mental Health apart is the emphasis I place on relationship and flexibility. I believe therapy is most effective when clients feel seen, respected, and understood, not pushed into a rigid framework or pace. My work is collaborative and culturally attuned, with space for curiosity, reflection, and growth.
From a brand perspective, I am most proud of the culture I am building. Luciana Mental Health is rooted in warmth, intention, and accessibility. Making therapy accessible is deeply important to me, which is why I am paneled with most major insurance companies and several EAPs in Texas, and I also offer virtual services in Florida. I want readers to know that this practice was created to offer high-quality care that feels both approachable and within reach.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was very outgoing, curious, and driven. I have ADHD, which is something I have grown to genuinely love about myself. As a child, it showed up as curiosity about the world and a desire to understand how things worked. I was always asking questions, exploring new ideas, and looking for what was possible beyond what I could see in front of me.
I also naturally fell into a caretaking role. I enjoyed looking out for others and paying attention to what people needed, often before they asked. That part of me felt instinctive rather than forced, and it’s something I still recognize in the way I show up today.
Looking back, I can see how those traits shaped my path. I have always marched to the beat of my own drum and felt drawn to venture out on my own rather than follow a set mold. My curiosity, drive, and care for others continue to influence both who I am and the work I do now.
