Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Garza.
Hi Thomas, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Started out an Automations and Controls Engineer. Got bored with sitting at a computer all day. So, I had always done photography on the side. I started helping a friend shoot weddings and another friend in fashion PR. So, I started shooting runway shows. Between both of those, I started getting a lot of my own work. So, I eventually had two full-time jobs. So, I decided to quit my day job and just do Photography. That was about 12 years ago. So, it’s been great now. Now I shoot New York Fashion Week, Miami Swim Week, Dallas Modern Luxury, and a bunch of other fun stuff. What else do you want to know?
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been too bad. It’s hard to make money but then want to upgrade my equipment. I have been struggling to raise my rates. I feel like I should have done that a long time ago.

I shoot mainly corporate headshots and events. I shoot most of the specialty sections and local ads for Dallas Modern Luxury Magazine. I also shoot New York Fashion Week and Miami Swim Week. Hoping to shoot Milan Fashion Week in February. What sets me apart is I have an engineering brain, so I understand lighting and camera settings really well. I am a more technical photographer than a creative one.
What matters most to you? Why?
Making sure the clients are getting the images they want. When I shoot, I send images right over to my iPad so that clients can see the images as I shoot. They can then make any changes right then and not have to worry if they are getting great shots.
