Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiara Gray.
Hi Tiara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Like many of us during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was quarantined and found myself buying more and more candles each time I went to the store. Unfortunately, these candles were turning my walls black from the soot produced while burning. When I did more research, I found that the exact candles I love for self-care and relaxation were actually filled with chemicals and toxins. That’s when I decided to begin making candles for myself and my loved ones in September 2020. Once I realized how much I loved making candles and how therapeutic it was for me, especially while dealing with the pandemic, I decided I wanted to bring clean and beautiful smelling candles to everyone’s home, especially after the positive feedback I’d received from family and friends. We pay such close attention to the food and drinks that we consume, I wanted to make sure we are also being cautious about what we are inhaling. Thus, WickT Candle Company was born in January 2021 in Dallas, Texas. To kick off my brand, I created our signature aromatherapy collection and named it the Prescription Plan, inspired by my interest in drugs and pharmaceuticals. I continued to add to the brand and as of January 2022, the WickT brand offers over 35 scents and 5 products!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, I envy the people can say they’ve had a smooth road because mine definitely hasn’t been gumdrops & rainbows. I went from earning a degree in biology to starting my own business and that was a struggle within itself because at the time, I knew little to nothing about starting or running a business. I was also blind to the fact that when it comes to candle making, it can be a whole science. I wasn’t prepared to go through weeks and sometimes even months of testing just to perfect one candle. But I will say that my experience in chemistry and science helped a lot!
As you know, we’re big fans of WickT Candle Company. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am local chandler which means that I make candles ranging from aromatherapy candles to massage candles. Aside from that, I also make other natural fragrance and self-care products. I founded my business to encourage everyone to self-care through fragrance because I feel like many of us don’t know what self-care truly is or we simply forgot due to dealing with the pandemic for three years now. My signature collection, the Prescription Plan features fragrances that are infused with essential oils to promote holistic relaxation. They can also be paired with everyday practices such as yoga, stretching, and cleaning.
I think something that sets my business apart from others is that everything is done with intent and a vision in mind. For instance, since January 21st, 2022 will mark our 1-year anniversary, I have decided that I want to give back by beginning funding on a scholarship grant in my business name. Hitting the 1-year mark is something that I’m extremely proud of in my business because not all businesses make it to this point and it only marks the beginning of many great things.
When it comes to my brand, I want people to know that you can either create lasting memories with my products or you can get the most out of self-love and self-care. There’s something for everyone and that something will bring you instant happiness.
How do you define success?
Success is being able to do what you love, achieve the goals you have set, give to others and make money while you do it. All four of those things. It takes hard work; dedication and it doesn’t happen overnight.
