Community Highlights: Meet Toya Pointer of Toya Lyn Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toya Pointer.

Hi Toya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It started at the tender age of four. I can remember playing with my mom’s old wigs. I would be styling and profiling (lol). Every Christmas the Barbie doll head would be on my list. I would comb my hair for hours and never to get tired. This led to me combing my little sister’s hair. Four girls no boys it is safe to say I had plenty of practice.

Doing hair has always been my dream job. The only other job I wanted was to be a detective. I am way too extra for that. I started my career immediately out of high school. Packed my things and moved to Houston Texas. I went to beauty school and thirty-two years later I’m still behind the chair.

I have worked for a franchise, on commission, rented a booth, a salon owner, worked in a suite, and taught cosmetology.

These jobs have landed me in some amazing places doing exactly what I love., I love everything hair. A typical week for me will start at an assisted living and end up on a set for someone’s photo shoot. However, my favorite place to be is behind the chair helping my ladies look and feel their best.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always highs and lows in the beauty industry. My biggest obstacle is staying afloat when the economy is bad. We have to be really creative because the first thing that gets cut is the salon visit.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
