Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Counts.
Travis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
What started as a moment rooted at my childhood skating rink grew into what would be my passion of bringing interesting music to the lives of many. In my early teenage years I started recording my own vocals and met some of the most important people in my life who continue to help me grow and learn in the music industry. I actually came from a small town in Virginia where I was bullied over being an artist. In 2017, my wife and I moved out here to Granbury, TX and started the build of RedWood’s Corner in 2019.
Since then, we have built so many relationships with amazing talent and people – not just in the DFW area but across the globe. Honestly, it’s taken a lot of perseverance to get to where we are today. We started as a cramped recording area and learned a lot about Texas music and musicians. We are now helping to create full-scale music productions, provide industry-standard mixing and mastering, and are diving into what we call real world music marketing!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We have stayed committed to this journey throughout many struggles and obstacles, especially if you want to include the years of staying in this profession before RedWood’s Corner even opened. The music industry can be very discouraging, and as an audio engineer it takes a special kind of person. You need the finances and resources to acquire the equipment, you need space to record in, you need a network of people who are even interested in working with you – let alone spend their hard earned dollars and trust you with their art. I’ve said many times if someone were to ask me if I’d recommend the path I’ve taken in this journey to anyone, I would definitely not. It’s not for the weak-minded or the weak-hearted.
We’ve been impressed with RedWood’s Corner, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
RedWood’s Corner was built for opportunity, literally! We wanted to create something that would bring opportunity to those who wouldn’t have received it otherwise. We know of many recording studios in the area, which we actually go to work out of many of them! What RedWood’s Corner offers is different – full service for musicians.
The first step is typically a consultation call to understand what an artist is really after, anywhere from production to long-term goals. We love recording, some songs that were recently written from years of emotions while others were written 25+ years ago – it’s a true honor either way. Several independent musicians don’t yet understand the importance of mixing and mastering, so we have fun showing them what different mixing styles can do to a song. We’ve also seen so many projects come in as “mastered” that were never intentionally mastered.
We have helped open artists’ eyes to more of the process of getting their music production where they want it, how to utilize social media and other online tools for their branding, and how to set their accounts up properly to obtain their shares after their art is released to the world. My favorite part of RedWood’s Corner is the positive difference we make in our client’s lives and careers.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
As a producer and engineer I actually work with a lot of other producers and engineers. The collaborative aspect in this field is so important and gets missed by SO many!
