Today we’d like to introduce you to Uzziah Campbell.
Hi Uzziah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m 13 years old, and I’m the Founder and CEO of Calm & Cure Candle Co. I’m in 7th grade, I love playing sports and I LOVE to play video games. I think God has a different plan for me than most boys my age though. I live in Tacoma, WA, where I saw my mom use candles and essential oils to relieve stress while she struggled with mental health issues. I began to make candles for her, learning everything from YouTube videos, after her doctor told her she could no longer use essential oils on her skin. While witnessing racism and civil unrest after the death of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and others, and hearing the anger of so many people who had to live with COVID-19, I decided that I would calm the world with the same candles that I was making for my mom. My business blew up after I was contacted by the local news station, to find out who the young kid was that was sending lots of free candles to doctors, nurses, and other front-line workers during the wake of the pandemic.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been easy for me because I’m a kid LOL! My mom, probably like several others with child entrepreneurs, handles the tough stuff. I do get overwhelmed with orders, but having to get a late lunch or dinner, staying up very late on weekends to make sure that inventory stays on the shelf, and missing out on some events with my friends are all worth it. It’s not really tough to deal with, but trying to get people to understand that my products are hand-measured, mixed, and poured and that I don’t have “Prime” shipping, is tough. It’s a great product, and people want it in their hands immediately! I get it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Depspite the odds, and larger candle companies saying that I wouldn’t make it, May 7th marks the second anniversary for Calm & Cure Candle Co. The Whole purpose is to sell a great product that helps relieve symptoms of stress and encourages calm and inner peace, through aromatherapy. 10% of every purchase from my company is donated to mental health organizations at the end of the year. This helps those who struggle with mental health issues receive treatment that they wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise. Calm & Cure Candle Co. candles are different from most because they’re created by hand with love, with a worldwide focus in mind. They are the result of a dream. My candles are mixed with 100% organic soy, non-toxic, phthalate-free fragrances that are infused with essential oils, and eco-friendly supplies. All of the packaging is recyclable, and the amber jars are made from recycled glass. Not only do I want to keep my customers healthy by reducing pollution in their homes, I also want to do my part in keeping the earth clean and healthy. Serving a product without the harmful chemicals helps everyone Keep Calm! I hope all of the readers remember the young King, Uzziah, who has a dream to calm the world, and to light the pathways to wellness, one candle at a time.
