Today we’d like to introduce you to Zachary Montgomery.
Hi Zachary, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I knew early on that I wanted to practice law in Texas, but I also wanted to understand business from the inside before stepping fully into the legal world. That led me to Texas A&M University, where I pursued an academic path rooted in both accounting and information systems, earning an undergraduate degree in business honor and accounting and later completing a graduate degree in management information systems.
College was also a formative time outside the classroom. I found community and opportunities to grow through Christian Business Leaders and the Texas A&M Singing Cadets. From there, I went to the University of Virginia School of Law, where I earned my law degree, stayed involved with Law Christian Fellowship, and contributed to the Virginia Tax Review.
Over the years, I’ve built a skill set that blends law, accounting, and investigation. I’m licensed to practice law, and I also hold credentials as a CPA and a CFE. Professionally, I’ve had the benefit of seeing different sides of the profession through roles at large and small firms, including time with PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young, and a boutique law practice.
On the personal side, one of the greatest gifts in my life has been meeting my wife through dancing in the Gift of Christmas at Prestonwood Baptist Church. We’ve been married for more than eight years, we’re raising two daughters, and we’re excited to welcome a baby boy soon. After a lot of guidance from mentors, careful planning, and prayer, I launched Montgomery Legal in 2022 to serve individuals, families, and business owners in my community. More recently, I’ve also had the privilege of teaching estate planning as an adjunct professor at the University of North Texas, starting in 2023.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most real career stories, mine includes setbacks that tested my resolve. I didn’t grow up with attorneys in the family, and I wasn’t coming from a background with built-in access or financial cushion, so I had to navigate a lot of the process through persistence and hard work.
Some of the more defining challenges included: getting turned down by multiple law schools before finding the right path forward; the financial strain of making law school possible; the difficulty of getting back to Texas and establishing my career there; job losses tied to corporate restructuring and the COVID era; and seasons of discouragement.
Those experiences were not easy, but they shaped how I view resilience and purpose. I’ve learned that closed doors can be a form of direction, even when it takes time to see how.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Montgomery Legal?
Montgomery Legal is based in the North Dallas area and works with clients across Texas. The firm is built around a practical idea: many legal problems sit at the intersection of law, money, and long-term planning, and clients are best served when their advisor can see the full picture.
Our work generally centers on three primary practice areas:
Federal tax support, including forward-looking planning, compliance-related work, and resolution/litigation matters.
Estate planning and probate guidance for families who want clarity, protection, and a steady hand during major life transitions.
Business counsel for owners and leadership teams, including entity formation and structuring, operational guidance, transactions, and ongoing advisory support.
In addition, I assist with forensic-style matters when clients need a careful review of financial records and fact patterns.
What makes Montgomery Legal distinct is the combination of perspective and client experience. Because I bring both legal training and a CPA background to the table, I’m often able to approach issues in a more integrated way, particularly when the tax or financial consequences are significant. And rather than running a one-size-fits-all process, the firm is intentionally designed to be high-touch and convenient. Whenever it makes sense, I’ll meet clients where they are, which reduces friction and helps people move forward without turning legal work into a logistical burden. Montgomery Legal is built to deliver a concierge experience.
If there’s one thing I want readers to take away, it’s that the firm’s focus is not only technical quality but also trust, responsiveness, and thoughtful guidance. I want clients to feel supported and confident, not overwhelmed.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The legal profession is continuing to evolve in how services are delivered and how clients evaluate value.
First, flexibility is becoming the norm. Many firms reworked their operations during the pandemic, and the momentum toward virtual meetings, streamlined digital workflows, and more accessible service models is not slowing down.
Second, technology, including AI tools, will increasingly shape legal practice. Used responsibly, it can reduce administrative drag and help professionals focus on strategy and client service. The challenge will be implementing these tools without sacrificing judgment, confidentiality, and quality control.
Third, in the tax space specifically, ongoing regulatory and compliance shifts continue to drive demand for proactive planning. With tax season approaching, many professionals are also focused on adapting to major recent changes tied to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and helping clients understand what those developments mean in real terms.
