Conversations with Brittany Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Johnson.

Hi Brittany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have loved painting my whole life but I consider my true journey as an artist to have begun three years ago. I moved to Austin in 2016 and a few years later found myself fully immersed in the art community. This was after a nearly ten-year break from art and what I believe was a disconnect from my true self. Meeting people who were following their dreams and thriving as full-time artists inspired me to do the same. I started painting again, and in 2018 on my 33rd birthday, I tried spray painting for the first time at Hope Outdoor Gallery and I haven’t stopped since. This past summer, I left my career in healthcare to pursue art full time and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the real struggle for me was believing in myself and believing that I could make a living as an artist. Growing up in a society that tells you otherwise really discouraged me and now I feel as if I’m always trying to catch up. I try not to compare myself to others, but I use that feeling of being behind as fuel and motivation to keep improving and working as hard as I can to be better than I was the day before. I don’t think that feeling will ever stop and it’s a good thing. There are no limits with art. The possibility of being the best doesn’t exist, but getting better and doing your best does, so you just keep after it. And it’s never too late to do what you love.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Murals are my main focus right now, with spray paint as my primary medium. My first love and training was in oil painting, so in between gigs I’ll spend time using oils for smaller pieces. I think this background carries over to the way I paint with spray and I would like to explore combining the two mediums more often. I am best known for my bright colors and portrait work. I love people and I love painting them just as much. I am most proud of my courage to leave a job that was no longer serving me and fully commit to my life as an artist. I think I’m still developing my style and always will be, so I can’t really say what sets me apart. I just really love painting, a lot!

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I’ve only travelled to Dallas once but I would love to explore that area more. I absolutely love Austin and am so thankful for my friends and the community here for helping me become the person I am today. I also love collaborating with other artists. Some of my favorite works are collaborations. I’ve got no complaints here!
