Conversations with Debbie Roberson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbie Roberson.

Hi Debbie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a grandma (Gigi) to eight amazing kids ranging from 22 months old to eight years old. I have always been kid-focused, and I have always loved making any occasion that we wanted to celebrate bigger than “average.” After a short stint as a pediatric dental assistant, I spent the next 35 years taking care of children in my home daycare, I retired from my “paying job” when my grandkids came along and they quickly filled my daycare, however, I still needed a way to earn money that didn’t interfere with me taking care of the grandkids. I’ve always loved doing anything creative, and when the opportunity to join Yard Card Queen came along, I knew immediately that this was the thing for me! This job would allow me to be creative, work my own hours, and best of all- spread a lot of excitement, happiness, and joy to others. This last year has proven we need a lot more of that!  I started in September, we were building a new home and had just moved in.  I definitely don’t recommend moving, and starting a business, during a pandemic, all at the same time! hahaha It was stressful, but I’m so glad I took the plunge. The look on peoples faces, and the excitement in the “givers” voices makes me want to give them the best yard surprise they’ve ever seen!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The toughest part for me was taking care of 3- 6 grandkids under eight, during a pandemic, where we couldn’t just go about our normal lives. In addition, trying to get a business off the ground while building a house/moving can seem overwhelming and stressful. You have to manage your time well in order to make a day job, and a side gig work together. Finding time to do “all the things” that help a business grow was difficult, but not impossible. I struggled with finding time to actually get on the internet and maximize my exposure, and I struggled with organizing all of the inventory I needed to get up and running. I was trying to unpack my house at the same time, so for me, there was just stuff everywhere! I am very organized by nature though, so it didn’t take me too long to figure out a system that worked for me, but as I add more inventory, I find myself reworking this system all the time. We have an AMAZING support team here at Yard Card Queen, website design, ordering portals, and inventory start up kits were all designed for me, this took a ton of work off my plate. As soon as I started posting, the business took off! I tend to be a little over the top with my yard greetings, and people just love how personalized they are, so recommendations started coming quickly and easily.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Creativity is my gift, and “acts of service” is my love language! Owning a yard greeting company is a perfect fit for me! I get to be creative when I bring all my cards to their yard! No two lawn greetings are ever alike. I love picking out the perfect graphics that I know will make them smile, and then turning it into a beautiful explosion of happiness on their lawn! I deliver, install, and pick it back up for them. They don’t have to lift a finger. I am a habitual DIY’er, I used to teach scrapbooking and canvas art classes, I make greeting cards, invitations (all by hand, not digital) little girls bows, crowns, and halos used for weddings and photo shoots.

Lawn greetings for me are like scrapbooking on yards, so it was just a natural extension of doing what I love. There isn’t anything I can’t create, I will work hard and figure it out one way or another. I love to make other peoples visions come to life, and I want every yard greeting to reflect the recipients interests, and what they love. I want them to be surprised, but I also want them to feel like I nailed their vision, and that it was the best gift ever.  I want them to feel like I really put my heart into their greeting!

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
At Yard Card Queen, we have a fabulous network of people to collaborate with, bounce ideas around, get opinions, and just generally support each other. We are available to collaborate with so many businesses! Some examples would be Realtors, for welcome home or congrats on your new home greetings. Party companies, like those that do princess visits, balloon twisting, or bounce house companies can collaborate with us to bring one of a kind total packages to a customer. People can support us just by word of mouth, referrals, and taking the time to write a review is very much appreciated!
