Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Adean Kingston.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
On my very first day of Medical School at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1999, I went to the Dermatology Department and told them that I wanted to be a Dermatologist! I wanted to start off my medical education on track to fulfilling my dream career. I didn’t go to Medical School to become a doctor–I went to become a Dermatologist and knew that was my calling. I was graciously mentored by the Department’s Chairman- Dr. Louis D. Falo, Jr., one of the Professors in the Department Dr. Larisa Geskin and all of the Dermatology residents. I did a year cutaneous oncology fellowship developing a dendritic cell vaccine for patients with Sezary syndrome. I also worked with a leading Melanoma expert, Dr. John Kirkwood on using a dendritic cell vaccine for melanoma patients as well. I did two away rotations in Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania and at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. I graduated from Medical School being awarded the Bernhard A. Goldman Prize for Dermatology and with honors. After completing a year of Internal Medicine at Shadyside Hospital UPMC in Pittsburgh, I moved to Dallas to do Dermatology Residency at the University of Texas Southwestern, UTSW. After residency, I helped start the very first Dermatology Department at the renowned Cooper Clinic. After five years there, I decided to open my own Dermatology practice in the Knox-Henderson area of Dallas-where Uptown meets Highland Park. Although it has been a lot of hard work and overcoming unanticipated obstacles along the way, growing this practice over the last six years has been a real joy. I love what I do-helping people to feel and look their very best is a real privilege.
Has it been a smooth road?
My journey has certainly had a lot of unanticipated obstacles to overcome and I truly appreciate all of them –as it is how you handle those circumstances that ultimately make you into the successful person you want to become. Those “obstacles” teach you so much and help make you stronger. They are invaluable lessons and although it may not seem like it at the time, you have to fail first before succeeding. My advice to young women pursuing their dreams is to never give up. It will not be an easy road. Know that before you start. Work hard and learn from people you admire. I wouldn’t be where I am today had it not been for the amazing mentors I learned from. I know that I am still learning and growing as a professional and as a person. My journey continues and I look forward to future challenges and learning experiences.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
As a Board Certified Dermatologist, I treat an array of medical dermatology conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and fungal infections. I am known for my very thorough full-body skin cancer exams. I enjoy doing surgical excisions of skin cancer and benign lesions such as cysts and lipomas. I also perform a lot of cosmetic procedures and believe that I am a skilled injector with a unique ability to sculpt a natural-looking face. I became a certified bioidentical hormone replacement physician last year because I think it is important for patients to feel as great on the inside as they do on the outside. It is very rewarding to see patients looking and feeling their best. I am very proud of the fact that I spend quality time with patients and that I own 100 percent of my business. A lot of Dermatologists have sold their practices to financial corporations and it concerns me that profits might take precedence to patient care under these circumstances. I also personally see all of my medical patients and do all of the facial injections myself- rather than using mid-level providers. My patients are particularly happy about receiving that level of care and that I own my own practice.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Work hard! Put in the hours. Remain determined and passionate. Do not assume it will be an easy road. Welcome challenges. Learn from people you admire. Continue to educate yourself. Enjoy every minute!
