Conversations with the Inspiring Amanda Knight

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Knight.

Amanda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from Medina High School, I started my college journey at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, SC. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Administration. After graduation, I moved back to Ohio and shortly after accepted a full-time position as an Athletic Director. At age 24, I had what I thought was my dream job. I quickly realized my ‘dream job’ involved working 60+ hours a week; nights and weekends. And no matter how much I worked, my paychecks were exactly the same.

Fall 2015, I moved to Arlington and I quickly realized my college degree wasn’t much use here because in order to be an Athletic Director you have to also be a licensed teacher – and teaching is not my jam. I decided to ‘settle’ for a job with a Fundraising Company in January 2016, which was my first sales job. Out of a 100+ male-dominated company, I was awarded Rookie of the Year my first year at the company. I enjoyed this job but felt I had more to offer the world outside of my cubical. A former co-worker of that company had just gotten licensed as a Real Estate Agent and talked to me about a career in real estate. After about a week of researching, I signed up for online real estate classes. Over the next few months, I studied for the real estate exams while working full-time.

I took a leap of faith in July 2017 and became a Real Estate agent. I’ve never worked for myself. I’ve never worked for solely commissions. I’ve not had health benefits. This was a scary feeling! I attended as many trainings as I could, put my head down and worked. Year one in the business I helped 33 families buy and sell their homes and closed $8,700,000 in volume. I just celebrated two years and have grown my business by 40%.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Society tells you to go to college, get a salary job, have a 401k and retire at 65. Leaving my salaried job, cashing out my 401k and not using my college degree was looked down on. I could have given up so many times and gone back to what was viewed as a safe way to do things. I refused to.

Quit worrying about other’s opinions. You cannot reach your highest potential by playing it safe, you’ve got to take some risks. You will never know what you can do if you are always living inside of your comfort zone.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am passionate about all facets of the Real Estate business, whether it is navigating the way for first-timers, helping a family build their dream home, providing help in the luxury market or training agents on how to build a successful business. There is no greater joy than helping people in and through each chapter of life through their real estate needs!

My business is built on dedication, communication, determination & trust while embodying the ability to cater and adapt to my client’s needs. I stand out from the rest due to my commitment and persistence. My past clients hired me not only for my commitment to them but also for the energy I bring to the table.

Just as the Real Estate industry evolves to become more innovative and efficient, so do I. You could never find a more dedicated, energetic, or focused agent to represent you! I’d love to earn your business!

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Traditionally, females are not encouraged to be in a leadership role. The question to ask is, does society tell us women cannot be leaders or does this come from us internally? In my opinion, there’s a large opportunity for a woman to change this 1920’s mindset. With a variety of platforms, we have more support than ever before with women in leadership. I believe if you speak up, you will be surprised by how many people are actually in your corner cheering you on. Go for it!
