Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Simpson.
Ashley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In August 2016, I moved to DFW to be closer to family. I come from a large extended family my paternal grandmother has 12 kids, 35 grandkids and 44 great-grandkids. I have always wanted to own a business, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. Teaching math was something I had been doing for my family for years, I love math and helping people, so it made sense for me to start my own tutoring service.
Do you have any advice for inspiring business owners?
1) You cannot operate in fear. You must take a chance, invest in yourself and your dreams.
2) Focus on your passions first and the money will come.
3) Stay positive. Setbacks are bound to happen. IT’S LIFE. Dust yourself off, re-adjust and keep moving forward.
It hasn’t been a smooth road I’ve had my struggles. My grievances stemmed from wanting to help my community but not know exactly how. I started an event planning business last year because I enjoyed organizing parties and events. I tried it but I realized I liked to organize events but not enough to do it on a full-time basis. Was I disappointed? Of course, but I kept moving. Everyone’s journey is different. Things take time.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I have been tutoring family members in math for years and with that experience, I decided to start my own tutoring service, Math Madness. My goal is to help students understand math concepts and to increase confidence in their problem-solving abilities. I want every student I tutor to succeed. A strong foundation in math will increase critical thinking skills, prepare students for college entrance exams, and opens an opportunity for a career in STEM. I currently offer individualized and group tutoring in subject areas: Elementary Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I think, in general, women are trying to balance career and life without feeling guilty. Women, especially mothers, wear so many different hats outside of the business it could be tough to manage it all without support. Becoming a leader or executive in any industry takes a lot of time for anyone. This could mean a woman would have to face the decision of choosing to put in the time or sit out to have children. Entrepreneurship is allowing females to be more flexible and helps ease the balance of motherhood and leadership.
