Education is a critical part of our society and without it, we do not have the ability to contribute positively to mankind.

Ashton is also the Head Mermaid with Adventure Mermaids. Adventure Mermaids mermaid school (out of Adventure Scuba), as well as a, is a ‘pod’ [or club] of like-minded mermaids and merman who want to enjoy the magic and fun in a safe environment.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The journey to becoming a mermaid is a strange one- you are becoming a mythical creature. Something that does not exist, and at times there is doubt if it is at all possible.

BUT once you dawn your first mermaid tail- you have already been transformed! You have become the mythical creature that you hear about in stories. I see that time and time again when I teach people at Adventure Mermaids (mermaid school). It instills a level of confidence that they might have thought was unobtainable before. It makes them think: “If I can become a mermaid, what other amazing things can I accomplish?!”

And I tell my students- “You really CAN be anything you want when you grow up- look at me! Your teacher is a mermaid!”

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Adventure Mermaids and Adventure Scuba story. Tell us more about it.
My ‘day’ job is a high school Animation and Audio Visual Teacher.

My other full-time job is being Texas’ Premier mermaid! I teach mermaid classes with Adventure Mermaids out of the Adventure Scuba shop (we have our own heated indoor pool).

I also work with the Children’s Aquarium in Fair Park as their exclusive mermaid. Working with an aquarium is any mermaid’s dream job. You get to teach kids about the animals and how to do their part to keep those animals safe.

It always goes back to instilling knowledge through discovery and magic. And who better to teach kiddo about eco-conservation than a mermaid?!

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Be who/whatever you want to be- even if it does not exist yet. YOU will make it become a reality!
