Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Watson.
Hannah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I used to want to be a nurse, I had a school picked out, along with a degree plan, and had begun taking classes specific to my core. That was before everything sort of fell apart. In January of 2017, my dad became really ill. He was in a coma for a month, and in the hospital for three. When he finally came home, he was not self-sufficient at all, and it was a full-time job to help him get to where he could even do something as simple as a walk to the bathroom. All the movies where people wake up from a coma and are completely fine the next day are so skewed it isn’t even funny. In August of the same year, right before school started back up, my mom had a heart attack and was in the hospital for about a week. It was about this time, that I decided that my dream of becoming a nurse was one that was laced with too much trauma. I realized I didn’t want to spend any more time in the hospital. So, I changed my degree plan to a basic arts degree and decided to take a philosophy class. That may very well be the best semester I have ever had. I joined the philosophy club on campus and was given the position of Communications Officer. My duties consisted of posting bi-weekly on social media, basic graphic design and creative, catchy content; plus a weekly club-wide email. That was when I realized that I had found something that I was really good at. I decided to see if I could pursue a business in Social Media Marketing. I gained a few clients slowly, and am becoming even better at my job than I realized I could be. I don’t have as many clients as I’d like to, but all good things take time, and I can be patient. One day, one client at a time.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I am almost 25 years old. I can’t tell you how often I feel so behind. My boyfriend recently broke up with me, I only have 33 college credits to my name so far, I have debilitating anxiety when it comes to driving, I still live at home, and one of my younger brothers is married with a kid. I’m not sure who’s idea it was to put so much pressure on young people to have their entire lives figured out by the time they are in their twenties, but I am here to tell you it is near impossible. I don’t have everything figured out, and half the time, I feel like I might be pretending to be an adult, and say ‘when I grow up’ when I am already ‘up’. The biggest victory for me so far was starting my business and realizing that I excel at something. Like I said before, I am nowhere near where I want to be, but I am starting, and I am doing something, and honestly, that seems to me like the most important thing. It takes time to figure out who you are in life, and where you belong. It’s not a quick off the cuff decision. Mine has not been a smooth road, but anywhere worth getting is going to be paved with difficulty, which will seem unfair sometimes; but I can promise you it is worth it.
Any advice I would give would be just to chill out. You are ok. Work somewhere near you, go to school, make good friends, better yourself and learn who you are. Life is not a contest. It’s so easy to think about where you want to be, and then forget to enjoy the present (which sounds like a line, but it’s not). Enjoy where you are, while you are getting to where you want to be.
Tell us more about the business.
I am the CEO of my own company. I created Hannah Rose Social Media from scratch. It may not always be called that, it is a bit wordy, but for now, it is what it is. Right now, I have four clients. I have had more, but certain jobs are just really short term.
I do a few things, actually. In a nutshell, I post on Social media: all types, from Facebook to Twitter and everything in between. But it is more complicated than that. Most of my clients don’t actually give me content to post, so I create content, short catchy content that catches people’s eyes. I create posts using basic graphic design, (i.e. Photoshop and Canva) I do my own photography and Photoshop to create great content. Writing is my superpower, so I use that skill to help me reach a businesses’ following in whatever ways it needs to be reached. For example, one of my clients is releasing an online course on infertility next month so I have been working with her to create some ‘hype’ for the course, and that required reaching a specific audience, which I have. I started her Instagram from scratch and now she has over 1000 followers in two short months.
People in my line of work are often obsessed with numbers and how many followers you can get. While that is part of it, I am a big believer in creating a page that feels like ‘home;’ going out of my way to attempt to connect with people on their level. With the community, I create I believe I am able to accomplish more for a business. I can get a unique insider’s perspective into how people perceive you and your brand, and with that insider information create even better pages. I want people to be as passionate and excited about your vision as you are. I make an effort to really get to know my clients and make a lasting friendly connection with each one. If I know who you are, I know how to work as an extension of you and bring across your vision for your company better.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I am really lucky to have my mom, she was able to introduce me to an acquaintance of hers, that has been invaluable in providing me with referrals and even introduced me to someone who has been helping me with networking.
I do need to ‘up’ my networking a bit, but it’s not always easy to find the right people who need my services. Its like ‘real-life’ social media. You have to find the target audience without online tools.

- Base price is 200 for up to 3 social media platforms
- If you need me to creat content for you that is up to 200 depending on the quantity
- Writing (ghost writing for blogs etc.) is 50 dollars for the first 1000 words, and then 5 cents per word after that
