Conversations with the Inspiring Isabel Peacock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabel Peacock.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Isabel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
To start, I did not ever picture myself to become an artist. I saw art classes as elective courses and did take art in middle, high school and college. I actually ended up finishing prerequisites for nursing school and acquired a minor degree in Science. After that, I took a break from school and had my second child in 2016. Being home with a newborn, I found myself exploring social media and being drawn to modern calligraphy pages. One evening my husband saw me watching a calligraphy video and curiously asked if calligraphy interest me. His question helped me have a moment of self-reflection. I asked myself many questions like, “Why am I drawn to this art? And is there a love in me for the art of calligraphy because it is a talent of mine?” My husband then encouraged me to try and explore the art myself. Sometime later I created some “Name Meaning Art” to display in our home, they were simple yet beautiful. I shared an image of the framed art on my personal Instagram. Soon after I had messages in my inbox from people wondering where I purchased the art. This was the opportunity that allowed me to start creating art for others. But I had to become official, right? I researched the modern calligraphy business world and learned that a great place to start was to use the influence of social media and Etsy. So, Peacock Pencraft was born in summer of 2018! I love this opportunity of having a business where I get to use some of my talents to serve others by creating custom artwork.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If anyone has ever had a smooth road, please share your secrets with us! As an artist, the greatest struggle I have come across is the poor use of comparison. Specifically, comparing the number of likes I have on a post, to the followers on my page, to the sales on Etsy and comparing other artists work to mine. And then basing my value from all of those things listed resulting in feeling inadequate. However, freedom has come when I’m honest about my struggles with those closest to me. I am reminded of what is true, which is that likes, sales, and skill level are not what define me, they are not who I am. I am so grateful to be surrounded by others who continuously encourage me, and appreciate my work. Though I enjoy solitude I have learned I do well walking the road I am on with others. No matter where you are at, be honest with trusted people around you and share how you are struggling and where believe to be succeeding. Hence, I have learned that my business will grow and benefit when I get help and feedback from customers, other artist and loved ones around me. Also, I understand that art is a craft and artist can never have too much practice. I’ve been privileged to take an online calligraphy course, sit in on a calligraphy workshop at a local art guild. And best of all is the special treat to learn from and practice with a retired art teacher, shout out to Nikki. In combination, I have been privileged to be sharpened and grow in my artistic ability. Today, I continue to take any opportunity set before me, as I am able. The range of art is broad from creating custom art pieces on paper, chalkboards, to wedding services, and signage. What I love so much about art is that it is not limited. I can pen on pretty much anything, anywhere!

What should we know about Peacock Pencraft? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m an artist, calligrapher, and owner of Peacock Pencraft. As mentioned, I’ve found art and calligraphy to not have hard boundaries. I’ve penned on all sizes of paper, wood, acrylic, glass, and chalkboards! I’ve recognized one of my specialties is working with chalkboards. I’ve created first birthday detail chalkboards, seating charts, welcome wedding and bridal shower signage on chalkboards. What sets Peacock Pencraft apart from others is that I work with the customer to create a custom art tailored to clients liking, from style, to personality, favorites or themes. At Peacock Pencraft, we understand that our business is here not just to make a living but to make a difference in the world. So, for our small part, we give 10% of all orders to International Justice Mission to help end slavery in our lifetime. It’s been incredible to see a glimpse of IJM in action through videos, letters and presentation by the CEO, Gary Haugen.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
The greatest advice is to start simply and simply start. So, in other words, you do not need to have the bells and whistles before you start a business and you do not want to be paralyzed by not having all of the extras. Just start simply and your business will grow as you grow. Do your very best and that is enough. Welcome others in to help you get started and to propel you to continue. If you don’t have others, be the friend you want others to be.
