Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Kelly.
Jamie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After I had my son, I found myself in this weird emotional/physical/mental limbo. I struggled to find balance between my new role as a mother and my journey of self-discovery as a 20 (at the time) year old. There was still so much I wanted to learn, do, see, and experience. I felt guilty that I had been blessed with this HUGE blessing but yet, I still wanted to have some things that were just MINE. I was passionate about so much, I didn’t want to lose myself as an individual but I did want to fully embrace my role as a mother. This is how Still Jamie Blog came about, as a creative outlet for my many passions. Still Jamie Blog is a resource for the mama who is okay with not having it all figured out. For the person who needs a quick recipe without sacrificing their fitness goals. For the natural haired, black beauty that needs 3c natural hair tips and anyone looking for encouragement. I really just want to inspire and encourage other women that imperfect lives are still worth living and loving!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
NO! I’ve failed 100,000 times during this journey. As a single mama who works full-time, I have to wear many hats. I found myself struggling once again with balance and time management. I was hard for me to find a schedule that would work for me to create great content, network, and build a brand. I would get so frustrated that I couldn’t attend networking events because I didn’t have a sitter or would be at work at the time. I even considered giving up blogging after I realized how much money other people were making while I was struggling to make ends meet. Now, I choose to maximize my productivity by utilizing any free moment I get to do something that gets me closer to my goals. My advice to any woman, ESPECIALLY, young women who want to build their own legacy is: 1- DON’T compare your journey to someone else’s. You don’t know what that person has sacrificed to get to where they are. 2- DO YOU! Focus on what you CAN do, not what you can’t. Show up for yourself, even when you don’t feel like it. You got this girl!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Still Jamie Blog story. Tell us more about the business.
Still Jamie Blog is lifestyle blog written for women by a young woman. I focus on natural hair, motherhood, healthy recipes, and fitness! Although the blog is fairly new, the connections I’ve made are long-lasting. I pride myself in being authentic, not just someone who writes things without any emotional connection. My brand is a reflection of me, my values, hopes, and dreams. There is only one me and that is what sets me apart. To date, I’m most proud of my resilience in such a saturated market! Still Jamie is constantly evolving to be the best. I tweak, tweak again, then tweak some more. I’m okay being the student because that’s the only way you can be the master. Basically, I’m not afraid of failure because I know I have to be really bad at something before I can be the best.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I personally haven’t found a “mentor” but there is enough information out there to learn from others and take what you need from each.
