Conversations with the Inspiring Jeanita Spikes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanita Spikes.

Jeanita, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My interest to do nails peeked at the age of 13, after getting my first salon manicure, I looked around at how many full tables and chairs there were, I was truly surprised. People were coming in by the minute to get nail services and it felt like an environment I wanted to be a part of. I began doing research to find out what it took to become a nail stylist. Thanks to my mom, I even shadowed a few times at a cosmetology school. In high school, I had the privilege of taking cosmetology workshops that fed my interest further, using my friends and family as models; I kept pressing towards my goal. Upon graduating from high school, I applied and won a scholarship that funded my nail stylist education. While completing state requirements to receive my nail stylist license, I quickly realized that I wasn’t going to learn everything in school. I longed to be around someone more experienced than I to learn and glean from them. This desire led me to work in a few salons in the south & north side of Chicago. Watching first, then becoming more confident to service clients. Investing in extensive education post graduating from nail school; was the shift of my career. Being willing to humble myself to learn from others, made all the difference in who I am today. I’ve had the pleasure of providing hand & foot care in spas, salons, at special events, and even in the area of educating other nail professionals. All of these experiences have brought me to where I am today and while I still enjoy what I get to do, I am looking forward to the future of more growth and expansion.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had many bumps in the road, from not passing my nail state exam until the very last attempt due to a lack of focus, to not knowing how to keep the profit and my clientele up; to even have a business. Adjusting my focus, involving myself with others pursuing their goals, and investing in business resources, have all been steps that I’ve taken to overcome hurtles in life and in business. I’ve realized that it takes a lot more energy & ingenuity to fulfill your God-given purpose. Once you’ve made up your mind to do so, the battle is on! Most of the time the battle is within yourself, rather you’re willing to sacrifice, to do what it takes to get to the goal.

I’d encourage anyone starting their journey to write out the vision and the ‘why’ behind what you’re doing. Having a reference to look at when you’re pursuing your journey will often times keep you on task, when ‘life happens’. I’d also say keep a good community around you. If people aren’t growing you their pulling you down, which will not be helpful during your journey.

what should we know about PaintedPolished Studio? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Using my professional education and quality products; I get to provide hand & foot care to my clients. Specializing in advance foot care and liquid gel manicures; I have a passion to perform these services in a calm-relaxing environment.

Many of my clients have declined the traditional nail salon experience due to their health challenges and need for attention to detail. They embrace the personalize hand and foot care received at PaintedPolished. I’m most proud of some community connections I’ve been able to create in such a short period of time. I’m also proud to hear my clients think so highly of the services rendered, that they refer their family, friends and co-workers.
It simply warms my heart to hear people come near and far to receive hand & foot care.

Customer service is also placed in high regard at PaintedPolished, while there are many nail salons to choose from, I want each client to know they are valued and appreciated when choosing to come to PaintedPolished. Clients receive brand new files, buffers, their own jetliners for pedicures and only metal sanitized implements are used on them. I’d like to spread NOTHING but LOVE at PaintedPolished!

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I’d say a barrier would be ‘one’s self’. In a society that everything needs to be gotten quick, fast, and in a hurry; often times we overlook that somethings take a ‘process’. If you have a goal, you may not reach it overnight, but that doesn’t mean quite or blame someone else. It means to adjust, go back to the drawing board. I also believe that helping someone else in their journey will also help you grow in your own. I’ve seen firsthand how effective supporting someone else’s dreams has made me feel uplifted and rooted in my own.
