Conversations with the Inspiring Joanna Nnorom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Nnorom.

Joanna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I feel beautiful, I feel unstoppable. Full of energy and vibrantly shining. I can conquer any task set before me.

I love the beauty that has grown in me, but I was not always this way. Growing up, I was chubby and darker than most and all of my friends around me would be the first to be picked on my boys (lol, I was fresh) and that always played I’m my mind thinking that I wasn’t enough and I yearned to be just like my friends and pretty like them.

I went to unfavorable measures to be accepted, trying skin bleaching creams and weight loss regimens others approved of. When I started asking “ Why should I be bleaching to change my skin color? “ and “ Why should I be trying to lose weight so I can look like others ?“ I realized God made me beautiful and if I choose to lose weight it would be for healthier reasons. I felt beautiful, I became confident and accepted myself for who I really was and not going by how society thinks I should look.

I matured and started embracing and enhancing my real beauty and developed a love for not only making myself feel beautiful but I wanted others to feel beautiful as well hence Painted by Fernormfaces being birthed.

If you ever have a hard time pronouncing the name FERNORM faces, think about “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou. I actually used the first three (3) letters of my maiden name (Fernander) and the other letters were selected from my marriage name (Nnorom). So, yeah, now you are able to relate to my brand a little bit better right?? LOL!

Always remember you are beautiful and wonderfully made.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I moved to Dallas, TX back in 2014 migrating from the Bahamas, I thought I knew how to do makeup. Little that I know, I had a bit of way to go before I considered myself a Professional Makeup Artist and actually know what it takes to become just that, a “Professional.” Makeup classes with Glamour Rx (Bridgette Washington), Tiyana Robinson, Renny Vasquez, Danessa Myricks, just to name a few, helped shaped and formed the artist in me. In my opinion, being a “Professional Artist” takes time. Time to develop your craft, and time to develop experiences and situations. Once I was able to figure out these things and define what type of artist I was, things started running smoother in my artistry.

Whatever journey you may be going on, find your WHY? Why are you wanting to start this journey? What does this journey mean to you? Finding your “why” in your journey will help you to have a deeper understanding of why you started so that you whenever you face any challenges, you can go back to your why which will push you to get past the challenge, move on and keep going.

Be consistent, be patient and allow time for growth! Success doesn’t happen overnight!

What should we know about Painted by Fernormfaces? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a local DFW Professional Makeup Artist whose mission is to enhance your beauty PHENOMENALLY. My objective is to deliver satisfaction to that “everyday women” through my exemplary makeup services that will help you look your best at any and every occasion.

I recently launched a Co-Parent Brand called “Fernormenal Beauty” @fernormenalbeauty and in April 2018. Under that brand, I introduced my first product which is my lash line (“Fernormenal Mink Lashes”). Though growth comes with time, I am super stoked and excited about the future of my brand and cannot wait to see what the future holds for my brand. So far, my lashes have been seen on a few celebrity clients which include Karli Redd from Love and Hip Hop ATL, Cora Jakes-Coleman, Anita Fabiola African Multi-Media Personality… just to name a few.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I am always on the go, a wife, a mom of two and works in “Corporate America.” Podcasts work best for me as the majority of my time is spent in my car (life of a Freelance Artist). There is no specific podcast I listen too but my interest in any podcast will either be spiritual, entrepreneurship, marketing or beauty.
