Conversations with the Inspiring Jordan Hankins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Hankins.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jordan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started in the apartment industry when I was 20 after leaving the service industry. Within a few years, I went from working at old apartment communities in bad parts of town to luxury highrise buildings in downtown Dallas. I worked full time as a leasing agent, went to school full time, and was in real estate school. At 22, I obtained my Texas real estate license and founded an apartment locating company. The company I co-founded had agents in every major city of the state after a few short years. At 27, I became an independent real estate broker and started my own marketing and apartment locating company, The Jordan Agency. Right now, I am working to grow my apartment locating company and continue to do freelance marketing for luxury apartment buildings.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road at all! There have been a lot of disappointments and unexpected changes along the way. After almost six years of being self-employed, I realize why not everyone is cut out to be their own boss. Some days, I am not cut out for it! I would have to say to anyone looking to get into the real estate industry or be self-employed in general that you must be patient and forgiving with yourself. Success rarely comes quickly and you will make a lot of mistakes but that is totally okay!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Jordan Agency story. Tell us more about the business.
Right now, I am focusing on changing the way apartment communities market their properties. I do content creation for luxury apartment buildings along with running my apartment locating company. I specialize in creating unique interactive content to help showcase the lifestyle of each community I work with. I am most proud of obtaining my broker’s license at such a young age and also the video content I have created with my videographer, Chris. It feels so good to get positive feedback about our video content from our clients and to hear the increased traffic the videos have created.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Finding a mentor is important. If you find someone who has the knowledge you wish to one day have, you should spend time getting to know them. But don’t forget like all relationships, it should be a give and take. Make sure you are pouring back into your mentor as well because their time is valuable too. I feel you should have multiple mentors. Every person you meet will have a different story of success, therefore, having more than one person you look up too will give you different perspectives.

The majority of my success has come from being a good relationship builder. People use the word networking but it’s not that. You have to be good at building and maintaining relationships to be successful in any industry. Everyone you meet could eventually send you business or connect you to a future projects. Don’t be that person who only reaches out when you need something!
