Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalie Stufflebean.
Kalie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always considered myself as a creative. From doodling to knitting, I have always been busy creating! I am one of those people who can’t sit still and art, in all forms, has been a great outlet for me.
My passion for photography started when I was about 8. I was gifted a Polaroid iZone, and I took it everywhere. Capturing my beautiful sisters, family, friends, and cat. I quickly realized how in our everyday lives, capturing certain moments was magic and truly a treasure.
Beginning of 2011, my junior year, I had saved up enough money to buy my own DSLR. I watched SO many videos on YouTube about manual shooting, composing, lighting, and what lens are best. I was a sponge! I was so excited to learn more and grow my knowledge. One piece of advance that has always stuck with me is “Just go out and shoot everyday! Doesn’t matter what you are shooting, what time of day it is, or where you are shooting. Just go out and shoot!” I truly believe that is something that helped me grow!
I officially started my business towards the fall of 2011. I’m so thankful for my family and friends who were super supportive during those first years. And to the clients who trusted me in capturing their family and special occasions. In between then and now I have gotten married and had two children of my own. Having my own children made me realize that time goes by so fast, and freezing those everyday moments is so special.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been smooth. I think with everything there are seasons of growth and seasons of rest/quiet. Everything happens for a reason. We just need to trust where the path is taking us.
The biggest thing I struggled with and I think many others is comparing myself to other creators. It is a thief of joy and can consume you if you let it. Ladies, don’t let it consume you!! You are strong, you are different, you are talented, and you got this! Everyone has something different to offer, just keep pushing and fighting for your business and it will grow!
What should we know about Kalie Evelyn Photography? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I would describe my photography style as lifestyle, unposed, light-hearted, and warm. I love capturing the connection and the story that is you and your loved ones. I specialize in family because I have a family of my own and I know how fast time flies by. Having those photos to look back on is a treasure, and I love being able to offer that to my clients. I am equally passionate about Newborn and Maternity sessions. I think being able to create a human is a superpower and I believe that needs to be celebrated.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Personally, I have never run into barriers regarding the opposite gender in the field of photography. I feel like it’s pretty equal and we view each other the same. And I’m really proud to be able to say that!
