Conversations with the Inspiring Michelle Parker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Parker.

Michelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a first-generation American of Sierra Leone descent. I grew up in a household that instilled the importance of faith, family, and culture. In my early childhood, my parents taught me to “cherish moments not things” and that making memories with my friends and family are one of the most invaluable gifts of life.

I am a 9 to 5er that found my true happiness exploring the world through travel. More specifically, I grew an appreciation and love for travel to Africa and the African diaspora.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think something that we all struggle with is purpose. What is it and how do we know when we’ve found it? I find comfort in knowing that God has not shown me my entire path but my job is to be open to it when he does.
The biggest advice I would give to young women who are interested in pursuing a non-traditional career path or starting her own business is that you don’t have to wait until you think you figured it all out before you begin. Just Start… now! Sometimes, we procrastinate not because we are afraid of a bad outcome, but because we are afraid of a good one.

Also, never apologize for being selfish about your time and your energy.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
My “9-5” is at a tech company in Dallas working as an Accounting Manager. My “5 – whenever” is Destination Melanin, a travel and lifestyle company that highlights African culture and travel. When I travel to different cities and countries, I am specifically looking for local, cultural experiences.

The reason why I started my company is because I noticed amazing pictures of people traveling to these beautiful locations but little to no information about what to do while you are there. My vision for Destination Melanin is to be part of the movement that not only encourages tourism in Africa and the African Diaspora but emphasizes a memorable experience that goes beyond a nice picture.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Women in leadership roles face very different expectations. One of the biggest challenges women leaders are currently facing is equality in the workplace.

My advice for women leaders everywhere is to go for what they want in their careers and not to give up. Hone the skills necessary to give you those opportunities. It is not enough to be in a role or to sit at the table so speak up and be heard. Also, don’t be afraid to speak to your accomplishments and stand in your own success.
