Conversations with the Inspiring Mrs. Toya Carter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mrs. Toya Carter.

Mrs. Carter, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
To make a long and somewhat tragic story short I will say this. My first year of marriage was TOUGH despite the pre-marital classes we took and the everlasting love we professed it was very hard. We were not ready if I am being honest. Me, more so than him because this is my first marriage, I approached marriage like I did everything else. Like it was a challenge to conquer and somethings to check off my to-do list. Obviously, it doesn’t really work like that. There were other factors too like my family and the act that I had been a single mom for years prior to being married. That being said, I felt ill-prepared, and like there was no one to turn to who understood my unique situation. From there, I started talking to some girlfriends, and some online friends and realized nope its not just me. So, I decided to take my formal education (Master’s degree in counseling from University of TN at Chattanooga) and my real-world knowledge and create my company. I help goal oriented women win in life and love, improve their communication, and create balance. I also wrote a book titled “The Wife’s Guide to Beating the Sidechick.” No, it is not a book to bash other women. It is more like a reminder that being a wife is real work.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nope. You don’t know what you don’t know. All I knew when I started my business was that I wanted to help. I wanted to serve other women so they could be happy. I had no idea about the mechanics of running a business. So, I had to learn all that as I went. Things like email marketing, SEO, target audiences, and the actual behind the scenes of attracting clients and taking payments was something I had to learn as I went along.

I would say go for it no matter what. You have to start where you are and upgrade as you go along. Also, seek help through mentors, coaches or others who have been there. Finally, make sure you believe in yourself and do not be discouraged if those close to you don’t see or understand your vision.

What should we know about Mrs. Toya Carter? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am an author and relationship strategist. I specialize in helping career-oriented women win in life and love by improving their communication skills, self-development, and learning to create balance. I am most proud of my book. It is truly a labor of love that I put my whole heart into. I am different because I am able to blend my counseling skills with my coaching techniques to help my clients get real results.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I love to read. Off the top of my head, my favorite book right now would be The four agreements – Don Miguel Ruiz – this book is life changing and helps you see things differently so you can be more in control of your thoughts and actions.

I love a variety of podcast so I will try to categorize them. For business: The Money and Marketing Podcast by Emmilie De La Cruz, How I Built This, Start-Up Stories and My taught you- by Myleik Teele are my go to.

For inspiration and just to feel good I like – Oprah Super Soul Conversations, and Impact Theory.

For absolute fun – Miseducation of the Stereo by LaJanee Cosby, Rants and Randomness by Luvie, and The Joe Budden Podcast.

I also really like Iyanla Vanzant’s and Lisa Nichols’ YouTube channels.

As for apps, I am in love with all things Google. The calendar, the to-do list, google docs, everything google. Google really helps me keep my life together. I also like the gratitude journal app and headspace meditation app.
