Today we’d like to introduce you to Reya Payan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Reya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started off as a receptionist at Toni&Guy. I had recently applied and found out they were already conducting a group interview, so I snuck in and I got the job! I fell in love with the culture and realized that I could really make a career out of this. Several months later, I left school and signed on to the Toni&Guy Hairdressing Academy. I worked for the company and later branched out and now work for myself.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t been easy, but it has been rewarding. I do what I love so it’s never work. I would come home some model nights crying because I kept failing certain haircuts. (Bobs mainly.) I was also told that I didn’t “look the part” and that really killed my confidence. Over time and with practice, my technical skills advanced and I let that do all the talking! My clients are definitely my confidence boosters and all I have to do is be me. My best advice would be don’t give up! The thing you suck at now could later become your niche, like my precision bobs.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Mi by Reya story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in cut and style. I think I’m mostly known for the OCD that comes along with it. I make sure that every hair is balanced, laying the way it’s supposed to and looking fabulous. I take my time, give a personalized cut and my clients appreciate me for it. I also do a mean silk press and blowout in record time!
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Set goals, don’t be afraid to take risks, stay confident in what you want to do, and just do it.
