Today we’d like to introduce you to Sruthi Jayadevan.
Sruthi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been passionate about art, style, and fashion for as long as I could remember. Although I pursued biology and business in college, I always knew I would end up doing fashion somehow. I got started posting my photos and outfits on Instagram, and slowly started gaining a following. I mix my traditional Indian clothing with western wear to create a unique look that truly represents me. I have had the chance to work with some amazing national and international brands during my career as a social media influencer and blogger. I also started my own clothing line called Curry Queen which encourages people from the South Asian diaspora to embrace their roots and culture no matter where they are in the world. We carry fun, quirky and meaningful designs that individuals like myself can connect with. I feel extremely grateful to have come this far in my career in just less than 1 year of starting out!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! Coming from an Indian family and the Indian community, in general, there is a lot of pressure to become successful. However, success is defined in a very narrow way. Most parents push their children to be doctors, lawyers, or engineers. When I told my family that I wanted to do fashion and modeling full-time, they were very hesitant at first. I also had a lot of friends and people from the community discourage me from giving up a career in medicine to become a social media influencer. However, I think over time most of my friends and family have come around. They see how much work goes into my career and how passionate I am about it. For those that are having a tough time deciding whether or not to pursue your dream life or dream career, don’t be afraid! Anyone that matter will understand and if they don’t understand they don’t matter. Your happiness is what matters at the end of the day. No one else is going to live your life for you. You have to do that yourself. So, make sure your choices align with what will make YOU happy.
What should we know about Curry Queen? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My official title is “social media influencer.” I work with mainly fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands to connect my audience with products that I love, and those that I think my audience will love. I like to think that I have a whole community of people that share the same mission, vision, and values that I do! It is absolutely amazing being able to have the support of all these incredible people from around the world. I am so grateful to have a community that truly cares about what I have to offer them. My vision for my personal brand is to be able to inspire others to live their best life the way that I am living mine. My goal isn’t to sell a product or brand, but rather encourage others to live out their dreams just like I am living mine.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Absolutely! I grew up in a tiny village in South India. There was so much poverty, hardship, and struggles. Life wasn’t always easy, but I learned so many lessons growing up in such an environment. I learned to be thankful for the smallest and biggest blessings in my life. I learned the importance of hard work and perseverance. When I moved to the U.S., I knew it was my chance at living the American Dream. However, I didn’t want to leave behind all the beautiful things that India taught me simply because I moved to a new country. I somehow found a way to mix both my Indian culture and the American one into a lifestyle. I was neither one or the other. I was a bit of both. I knew there were tons of people like me all over the world, and connecting with them was definitely one of the biggest reasons for my success and growth in my personal and work life.
