Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrianne Geter.
Hi Adrianne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My wonderful journey full of highs and lows started in Michigan. While in Michigan I was always fascinated with the movement of the body and what a body is capable of. That energy and fascination lead me into taking dance lessons at the age of 13, becoming an assistant instructor at 16, becoming an actual instructor at 19, and finally purchasing my childhood dance studio at the age of 25.
During this time, I trained 100s of dancers and movers. My dancers performed in recitals, competitions, and talent shows. Along with training my dancers, I also had my own personal trainings going on, I didn’t have much extra time but I still managed to train a few days a week and I was even able to take a couple trips to train out of state. With all of my training, I always felt like there was something missing. I was praised for my high energetic dancing, my sharp movements, my strength, and my dynamic choreography but there was a small void at times.
1/1/2015 I went through what I call my “spiritual awakening.” Prior to that day, I had a few stressful life situations and on that the day I was lead to more clarity and growth. After 1/1/15 I changed my life and became more organized, my eating habits changed, my friend circle change, my look changed and my outlook on life changed. I became an enhanced version of myself. During all of this, I took my first yoga class and I went to Reiki school.
Yoga was wonderful because it felt like dancing for me, reiki was wonderful because it felt like healing. I loved them both. Once I started taking more yoga, I learned about breathing and I realized I had been breathing the wrong way for 27 years. I practiced yoga, taught dance, and gave reiki sessions for years., the yoga made me a better instructor and the Reiki healed my soul. Finally, I was lead to “Detroit Yoga” in Ferndale when I was 30 years old and this is when the studio owner Jason taught me how to breath correctly. That changed my yoga practice, my dancing, my reiki, it changed my life. That was the missing piece, the breath. The breath is your “life forcer energy” if you don’t have that, I feel as though something will always feel missing.
After running my studio for 7 years the chapter was closing and I realized it was time to move on. It was hard but it had to happen. I closed my studio, the studio that I first walked into at 13 years old, my career. I closed, packed my bags and moved to TX where I was lead. If I tell you that story, I would take another 10 paragraphs. Once I made it to the great state of Texas, I said I was done teaching, I took a couple months off from teaching and I was right back in action. You can’t stop something that’s your calling.
I am now 34 years of age, I’m teaching Yoga, Group fitness and I’m Reiki healer. To this day I am still fascinated with the art of the body and what it is capable of. I feel like many people do not know their bodies full capabilities so I incorporate what has helped me and that’s the yogic breath.
I teach all of my yoga clients breathing, all of my fitness clients are reminded to breath and we practice Meditation Mondays once a week, my Reiki clients are taught breath work and my adult dancers are reminded to breath. The breath has changed my life and I feel as though the are of movement combined with mindfulness can help change the world one body and one breath at a time.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
In my opinion, I believe every human being goes through challenges, it’s just how life is. My struggles were trusting life. We were all put on this planet for a purpose, I believe our lives are already planned and predestined, we have to learn how to trust, surrender and go with the flow. If we try to have too much control, this is when the problems occur and that has probably been my main struggle at the beginning of my journey, trying to force things rather than just allowing things to happen. Have faith, go with the flow and the rest will follow.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a yoga instructor, a group fitness instructor, and a Reiki healer. I specialize in incorporating the art of movement and mindfulness to build natural bodies and get people more comfortable with their internal so it can project externally. I’m most proud of my faith, intuition, and my ability to brighten other people’s day. What sets my teachings apart is the creativity, authenticity, love, and history behind it. Through my journey I have been in so many situations, it’s lead me to see myself in so many people, I can relate to many people which helps my bring comfort to others.
I know how the injured person feels, I know how the hyper person feels, I know how the overachiever feels, I know how the insecure one feels, I know how the introvert feels, I know how the extrovert feels. I see myself in so many people so there is never any judgment, even when I’ve had rude clients, I know how they treat me is a projection of their own reality and it has nothing to do with me, they get love too.
What set’s me apart is my peace, we do not live in a peaceful world, and I feel like that’s just hard to come by.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My parents, step-parents, and my brother. They support me though everything.
Miss Shirley St. Mary, she was my very first dance instructor when I was 13 and she sold me my dance studio. I was young, I had never taken a business class and I had no idea what to do. She told me she was selling it to me because “she knew I could do it.” She has passed away now, she passed away the year I closed the studio, and to be honest, her passing gave me more peace when I closed. I know she would be very proud of me.
Jason from “Detroit Yoga” in Ferndale, MI. He taught me how to breath properly and that changed my life. He’s the 1st yoga studio I went to that didn’t play music; The breath is your music.
My former DFL (dance studio) employees. They gave my studio a chance, they helped my dancers grow, traveled with me and they were just a huge blessing! Miss Victoria, Miss Anna, Miss Chelsea, and Miss Victoria’s sister, Miss Nicole took the time out on many occasions to go out of her way and train the girls voluntarily. Without them, there would have been no DFL- Dancers for Life School of Dance.
My husband. Last on the list but first in my heart. This man is my rock, my support, and my strength. The transition from dance teacher to yoga and fitness was very hard for me. It’s hard to drop an image that you’ve had for years. He’s helped me though it all and more.
