Today we’d like to introduce you to Aliyyah Brooks
Hi Aliyyah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Being born and raised in the Caribbean nurtured my childhood dreams of designing beautiful spaces filled with color, nature, natural light and the feeling of openness where the cool breeze flowed through so effortlessly. Once leaving the Caribbean in my later teen years I studied in London & went to University on the coast of England, keeping myself rooted close to water where I felt the most at home.
Living in the UK gave me an experience of smaller spaces, a busier lifestyle and how to balancing these within your home. Making the most of every inch of space and the need to be organized and uncluttered. I started my design journey redesigning friends homes and getting my first break for a client who needed a complete redesign of the bedrooms in her home – primary & a boy & a girl’s rooms. This project was a great learning curve for me. I subsequently worked on rental home models and of course the designing of my own homes from my first apartment to our 3 bed home with a beautiful garden space and workshop.
I left my corporate career in London in 2013 and focused on design but mainly in home decor where I created products in the workshop at home and sold on platforms such as Etsy.
The move to Dallas in 2019 has provided me a mixture of the two lifestyles – Caribbean & European – and the ability to inject a different perspective into the Texas Home Design scene with these influences. I founded Balisier Concepts Interiors in 2023 and landed an amazing opportunity to remodel an entire 1980s home in Dallas from dated to contemporary which has been such a triumph in so many ways both personally and professionally. It is in it’s completion phase of the indoor of the home but we are working now on the remodel of their outdoor kitchen area.
In this same time period I have completed other smaller projects, that of multiple bedroom redesigns, a home refresh with paint, furniture, lighting & accessories and a primary bathroom remodel in projects throughout the DFW metroplex from Irving to Frisco to McKinney & Allen.
My goal in 2025 is to make a name for myself in the Luxury Home Remodel market in Dallas and to explore commercial design opportunities.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Launching a business in a new country, whilst being a mom of a neurodivergent toddler at the time and trying to build a new life overall did have it’s challenges at times.
Being a solo entrepreneur wearing all hats can be tiring and lonely and coupled with post covid life meant I spent a lot of time in my office working on the business including it’s processes and trying to ensure that these were in place before the rush of projects so that they would run as smoothly as possible. Something however, I am thankful for now.
From a project perspective there are always things that pop up, especially in older homes, that make you have to put on your ‘thinking hat’ quickly to pivot and come up with solutions. At the time it may seem daunting but yet again I am so thankful for those opportunities to problem solve and still create amazing designs for my clients.
With the abundance of Interior Designers in Dallas my challenge to overcome currently is standing out from the crowd and establishing myself as a Designer with a Difference!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Though not limited to, I specialize in luxury kitchen and bathroom remodels. These spaces I feel allow me to utilize my skills for both function and design and make such great impact of the way of life of a client. Each client uses their spaces specific to their family’s needs and I am always intrigued to learn this and how I can help alleviate any problems whilst providing an elegant and beautifully crafted space. I love to make an impact on someone’s everyday life through smart ergonomics & organization.
In the whole home remodel I have designed and seen through to completion the rebirth of an outdated and non functional home into one that works so well for this family. At the start of the project they couldn’t envisage the new home and were daunted by the sheer amount of work but I was able to not only show them the projections of what the spaces would look like but be that guiding hand throughout the process to put their mind at ease knowing it was under control. For me this is one of the most important parts of hiring a skilled designer and a competent contracting team.
My use of opulent materials, re-envisaging of spaces and my application of color that create the drastic before and after transformations are what I am best known for and most proud of. The ability to see a space so differently to it’s current layout and aesthetic and to go from on paper to reality is amazing to me!
I believe my experience of life in multiple countries and cultures and my passion for blending these as well as my want to enhance lifestyles through your homes sets me apart from other Designers in Dallas.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Growing up in the Caribbean meant lots of sunshine and time outdoors but what I loved the most was the frequent gathering of family and friends coming together to just be together, no ‘real’ reason was needed.
To laugh, to love, to eat, to relax, to just be! These gatherings were always ones I enjoyed as the house was filled with some much love that just radiated through the rooms. I remember so many great hugs with my aunts, grandmother, etc and always having my brothers and cousins around me. So many generations together, I loved it!
