Conversations with Amairani Thomason

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amairani Thomason.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I had been in the medical field for as long as I can remember. I worked as a pharmacy technician for most of my adult career. It was a great job until COVID happened. I was working at the hospital and while it was rewarding helping people overcome a terrible hardship it also showed me that working for the “man” was not something I wanted to do. My husband got a great job and he was able to buy me my very first camera. I call him my first investor for this reason. I’ve always wanted to learn photography as a hobby. Ever since I was a young girl I’ve always wanted to share the beauty I saw with the world, and a camera was my medium. Of course, YouTube university was a must, and while learning everything I wanted to know I realized that I could grow this into a business. Little by little I kept researching and learning. Getting models from friends, niece and even coworkers to practice. Slowly but surely I grew what was once a wish to my career. From the very beginning, weddings were something I’ve always wanted to do. My husband, Arthur, and I married at the Courthouse. While I don’t regret or would change anything about that day, it didn’t give us the opportunity to have the big beautiful wedding I’ve always dreamed as a little girl. With each of my couples and being a part of their wedding day, it truly fulfills younger me in the best way possible. Since I started my business in 2022, I have been helping brides fully focus on being present and enjoying what matters the most.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. The hardest part is learning how to be a successful business owner. This job is more than just going out and taking pretty photos. It truly is about making sure you still love what you do and are able to make a living out of it. Learning how to separate the creative part of my job and the business part has been so challenging. It also doesn’t help that imposter syndrome is so real it can paralyze you. In a field where you constantly try to better yourself, you end up comparing and tearing yourself apart. It’s something I have been battling since the very beginning and while I still have good and bad days, I am not able to snap out of it and truly say: “Amairani, you are literally doing the darn thing, get it together.” Time after time I pick myself up and make sure that the small voice doesn’t tear what I have build from the ground up.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a couple and wedding photographer. I am known as the calm voice in the chaotic day of a wedding. The ‘let me handle it’ gal. I am most proud of bringing so much joy to every single one of my couples for years to come.

What does success mean to you?
Defining success is so much more than just profit, of the revenue you bring. As a creative Latina woman, success is overcoming the most difficult of journeys while learning how to do better next time. My business has been the biggest commitment (after my husband 😅) I have ever taken. I came into this business knowing that it would be that, a business from the very beginning. Even small steps is still progress. Loving what you do is another way to know you’ve succeeded.
