Conversations with Amber Rater

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Rater.

Amber Rater

Hi Amber, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
This whole thing started as a kid with a camera taking pictures of her friends for fun. I wanted to make art like we saw in the magazine with models. Having grown up in the Next Top Model era, there was no shortage of volunteers to practice techniques and scout locations with.

I didn’t decide to do this professionally until I was planning my wedding, and I became aware of how expensive photographers can be. I wanted to provide people with a more affordable option. Preserving memories should be affordable for everyone.

So I bought a better camera, I studied up on editing, and I got to work building a portfolio.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it’s been easy so far. I’ve had the privilege of working with the most amazing people who show up with great attitudes and realistic expectations. A laid-back vibe is great when it comes to photoshoots because they have a lot of variables you can’t control. The weather could turn, the children can be fussy, wardrobe malfunctions, equipment mishaps, bug bites, you name it. Gotta roll with it and hope for the best or call it a wash and reschedule. Can’t let that kind of stuff get to you.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I take a good picture. Sure. Lots of people can do that. But what I hear most from my clients is that I photograph people in a way that shows their real personality. Not just a smile, but a laugh. I’m good at that. I’ve spent a lot of my life people watching and I’m good at seeing people the way they’d like to be seen. There’s nothing better than showing someone a photo of themselves and seeing how they light up when they love the way they look.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My Virgo nature! Haha. Really though. My attention to detail is definitely my superpower.
